About The Program

The IITB-Monash Research Academy invites applications for the IITB-Monash Research Academy PhD Scholarships 2019. The program offers graduates from India an opportunity to work with both IITB and Monash supervisors, as well as industry partners for their PhD. The students will spend at least one year in Australia and graduate with a joint PhD degree from IITB and Monash University. It helps students get a truly global experience and paves way for future career success. Selected students can benefit from a grant of up to AUD 25,850 along with other benefits.

The following applicants are eligible for the scholarship: 

  • Should have received the first class or equivalent Master’s degree
  • Should have received the first class Bachelor’s degree
  • Should have a valid GATE score
  • Satisfying requirements of academic qualifications and English Language proficiency of Monash University.

Note:  Candidates without a valid GATE score or research fellowship can be considered for admission in exceptional cases given that they have a minimum of 2 years of professional experience.

Benefits

The selected scholars will receive the following benefits: 

  • INR 3,72,000 per annum prior to the first 2 years
  • INR 4,20,000 per annum after the first 2 years
  • A scholarship grant of up to AUD 25,850 per annum in Australia
  • Minimum 1 year in Australia working with a Monash University co-supervisor (some projects may require the applicant to be in Australia for a longer period of time or undertake more than one trip)
  • Waiver of tuition fees at the Monash University, Australia

Note: The scholarship amount represented above is tentative and might change on the basis of various factors. The actual amount of scholarship that will be provided to a student will depend on his/her qualifications, grades and performance.

How can you apply?

Follow the steps to apply: 

Step 1: Fill the Expression of Interest form online.
Step 2: Wait for the response of the provider, the applicant will receive a mail and a unique Form A Number (FAN) if they qualify for step 2.
Step 3: Fill the application form (Form A) and upload by logging in on the online portal. 
Step 4: Attach the necessary documents.
Step 5: Submit the application.

Selection Criteria

The candidates will be selected based on a three-tier process in the following way: 

  • Shortlisting of applicants through the Expression of Interest submitted by them 
  • Shortlisting of applicants through the FORM A duly filled and submitted by them 
  • Personal interview for further filtration of students 
  • Notification of selection

  • The PhD scholarship program takes almost 3.5 years of full-time study (or part-time equivalent) to get completed.
  • The selected students will spend a minimum of 3 months of their PhD candidature at Monash University, Australia with their allocated co-supervisor.
  • Students will receive a generous grant to facilitate the PhD programme experience.
  • The duration to be spent at Monash University may be long or short depending on the requirements of the research. 
  • The students will be provided with opportunities to develop professionally including research methodology and research leadership training.
  • The students will have the opportunity to attend major national and international conferences.
  • The research will be conducted in a team-based approach. 
  • The research programme in the IITB-Monash Research Academy will be multi-disciplinary which will allow discoveries to be made at the interface of disciplines.

FAQ's

Q. How much does the PhD program cost?
A. 
The students need to pay a fee of INR 49,076 + INR 6,000 for the hostel, mess and transportation within the campus for the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay whereas, the fee for the Monash University will be fully waivered. 

 

Q. During the candidature will it be possible for the applicant to obtain married-persons' accommodation?
A. 
The chances of getting such accommodation are very slim because limited rooms for such categories have been reserved. 

 

Q. What is meant by "Proposed Enrollment Detail" in the application form? 
A. 
The applicant needs to fill in the commencement date of the program inferring when they can join. 

 

Q. When is the program meant to commence? 
A.
 The program has 2 intakes each year. One in the April-June time for the session in July and the other in November-December for the session held in January.
