To be eligible, an applicant must:
- Be nominated by a doctoral faculty member
- Be a full-time PhD student over the two consecutive academic years of award
- Have three years remaining in the graduate program at the time of nomination
Benefits
The selected students will receive a variable stipend based on the region for two academic years.

Selection Criteria
Selections of the candidates will be made on the basis of research excellence, technical interest alignment with IBM and the academic progress as evidenced by publications and endorsements from the faculty advisor and department head of the applicants.
Terms and Conditions
- Students receiving fellowship or internship from another institution or company except for academic scholarship during the same academic year of IBM fellowship may not be eligible for an IBM PhD Fellowship.
- Students belonging to US embargoed countries are not eligible for the program.
- The key focus areas of this fellowship include -
- AI/ Cognitive Computing
- Cloud/ Open Source
- Data Science
- Internet of Things
- Quantum Computing
- Security/ Cyber Security
- Only three nominations per department can be submitted.
- IBM employees, IBM contractors, and IBM supplemental employees are not eligible for the fellowship.
- The fellowship payment will be directly made to the University/Institution and not to the student awardee.
