About The Program

The Humboldt State University, Germany invites applications for the Humboldt Research Track Scholarship 2019 from PhD applicants. The aim of the scholarship is to support outstanding Master’s students who plan to pursue a PhD degree by offering a grant for the transition phase between the commencement of a Master’s program and the beginning of a PhD level research. The scholars have the opportunity to win a scholarship grant of EUR 800 per month.

The following applicants are eligible for the scholarship program: 

  • Master’s students with an outstanding academic record who plan to pursue their PhD degree at the Humboldt State University
    OR 
  • Graduates who plan to pursue their PhD degree at the Humboldt State University
Benefits

The selected scholars will receive the following benefits: 

  • A scholarship grant of EUR 800 per month for up to 6 months
  • Scholarship holders with children receive an additional grant of EUR 400 per month for the first child and also EUR 100 for each additional child

Note: In exceptional cases, the funding can extend for more than 6 months. Click here to know more. 

Documents

The following documents are required to be attached along with the application:

  • An updated curriculum vitae of not more than 2 pages
  • Sketch of the applicant's research proposal of not more than 2,250 character
  • Certificates of the applicant's academic degrees, including certified translations
  • Transcripts for courses attended (if applicable)
  • Letter of recommendation from the applicant's Master thesis supervisor or from one of the instructors from the applicant's Master’s program
  • Expert review of the applicant's PhD proposal by the mentor at the University the applicant wishes to work with during the funding period
How can you apply?

Follow the steps to apply: 

Step 1: Visit the official scholarship page to access the application portal.
Step 2: Register and create a new account.  
Step 3: Verify the email address through the activation link received in the email. 
Step 4: Set up a password and begin filling the application form with the required details.
Step 5: Fill in all the details after clicking on the apply link.
Step 6: Submit the application.

Selection Criteria
  • The final decision on who is awarded the scholarship will be made by the university management, while the Vice President for Research has decision-making responsibilities for the Structured PhD Programmes.
  • The decision will be based on the following criteria:
    • Assessment of the applicant’s academic qualification and performance
    • Assessment of the research project of the applicant
    • Assessment of the applicant’s personality

Terms and Conditions
  • The call for applications is subject to the final approval of the allocation of funds for the scholarships.
  • The letter of recommendation and expert review should not be written by the same person.
  • All application documents must be submitted in German or English.
  • Scholarships can only be started once the applicant has received his/her final degree results and must commence by the start of the next funding cycle.

 Applicants must meet the relevant admission criteria for doctoral studies at their aspired university.

 

Q. Who can be the mentor during the funding period?
A.
Only professors of the Humboldt State University can become mentors. They do not necessarily have to supervise the applicant's PhD.

 

Q. What is the duration of the scholarship?
A.
The scholarships are awarded for a period of up to 6 months and in exceptional cases depending on the application, the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin may extend the funding for an additional 6 months.
