About The Program

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme 2019-20 invites applications from PhD applicants from around the world seeking admission on the full-time basis in Hong Kong universities. This fellowship scheme aims to attract talented students from around the world to pursue PhD from Hong Kong.

EligibilityDeadline Date: Closed
  • Applicants seeking admission as new full-time PhD students in UGC-funded universities of Hong Kong are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must have excellent academic records.
  • Applicants must have the ability/potential to do research work.
  • Applicants must demonstrate outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Applicants must demonstrate excellent leadership qualities.

 

Benefits

250 candidate will be selected for the PhD programmes. Each of these fellows will receive an annual stipend of HKD 301,200 (approx. USD 38,600). Also, the candidates will get a conference and research-related travel allowance of HKD 12,600 (approx. USD 1,600) per annum for a period of up to three years.

 

How can you apply?

Eligible candidates can apply online by following the steps mentioned below:

Step 1: Click here to apply the initial application to the Research Grants Council. 
Step 2: Scroll down to read the instructions carefully and then click on 'Initial Application Form' button.
Step 3: Fill in all the required details and submit the form.
Step 4: The applicant will be assigned an HKPFS Reference Number which needs to be mentioned in the application for admission to the universities selected by the applicant.
Step 5: Now, click here and scroll down to apply for PhD at the proposed universities of RGC. 
Step 6: The applicant needs to select the University of his/her choice and fill the PhD Fellowship application form after ensuring that the applicant fulfills the selected university's required eligibility criteria.

City University of Hong Kong: 1 December 2018
Hong Kong Baptist University: 1 December 2018 
Lingnan University: 2 December 2018 
The Chinese University of Hong Kong: 3 December 2018 
The Education University of Hong Kong: 3 December 2018
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University: 1 December 2018 
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology: 4 December 2018
The University of Hong Kong: 1 December 2018

 

Selection Criteria

The participating universities may conduct interviews with the applicants. The shortlisted applications will be reviewed by one of the two Selection Panels which will be comprised of experts related to the relevant areas. The candidates will be evaluated on the basis of their research ability and potential, communication and interpersonal skills as well as leadership abilities.

  • The eight University Grants Committee (UGC)-funded universities in Hong Kong that are participating in the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) are as follows:
    • City University of Hong Kong
    • Hong Kong Baptist University
    • Lingnan University
    • The Chinese University of Hong Kong 
    • The Education University of Hong Kong
    • The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
    • The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
    • The University of Hong Kong
  • Applicants who have studied in non-English speaking universities will have to attach score results of TOEFL or IELTS in their PhD applications to the concerned universities.
  • Each applicant is eligible to submit only one initial application through the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme Electronic System. More than one application submission will lead to disqualification of application form.
  • Applicants are advised to save and/or keep the printout of email confirmation after application submission for future reference.
  • Applicants can make changes in their initial application before the end of the deadline.
