About The Program

Entries are invited for HG Wells Short Story Competition 2019. Founded by the world-renowned BBC Aeronautics Correspondent Reg Turnill and his wife, Margaret, this competition aims to celebrate the life and works of HG Wells. It encourages creating writing among the youth and offers attractive rewards to the best short stories.

The competition is being organised in two categories and offers the participants the chance to win prizes worth up to GBP 1000. The theme for this year’s competition is TIME in its broad interpretation.

The competition is open to all. However, there are two categories for this year's competition:

  1. Authors 21 years of age and under (Junior category)
  2. Authors 22 years of age and above (Senior category)

Note: The age for these categories will be considered as on 8th July 2019.

  • Prize of GBP 1000 for Junior category (aged 21 and below)
  • Prize of GBP 250 for Senior category (aged 22 and above)
How can you apply?

Follow the steps below to apply for the competition:

Step 1: Visit the web page here and apply (according to age) to suitable links for the competition.
Step 2: Fill information related to personal details and upload the story.
Step 3: Pay the application fee and submit the entry.

Important Dates
  • Final date for entries: Monday, 8th July 2019
  • Announcement of shortlisted candidates: Saturday, 21st September 2019
  • Awards Ceremony at The Grand, Folkestone: Sunday, 24th November 2019
Terms and Conditions
  • If an applicant enters the age as "21 and under" for the competition or is a student, the organisation may ask for proof of age or student status later as part of the entry.
  • There is no entry fee for the Junior category.
  • For the Senior category, the entry fee is GBP 10 (GBP 5 for those with student ID).
  • The entries will be accepted up to midnight of 8th July.
  • Entries can only be submitted online.
  • Entrants should submit their stories (in .pdf or .docx format).
  • The length of the story should range between 1,500 and 5,000 words.
  • Double quotation marks should be used for speech while single quotation marks should be used for other appropriate purposes.
  • Applicants should make sure that they do not have their name or address anywhere in their uploaded document. The committee will judge all entries as “blind”. So, including any name or address will invalidate the entries.
  • All submissions should be the writer’s original work.
