About The Program

Google PhD Fellowship India Program 2026 is an opportunity offered by Google to support promising Ph.D. candidates of all backgrounds who seek to influence the future of technology. The program was created to recognise outstanding graduate students doing exceptional and innovative research in areas relevant to computer science and related fields. The selected fellows will receive up to USD 50,000 (approximately ₹43,40,296) to cover stipends and other research-related activities, travel expenses, including overseas travel for a 4-year fellowship and a Google research mentor.

EligibilityDeadline Date: Closed

To be eligible, an applicant must: 

  • be enrolled full-time in the Ph.D. program
  • have obtained an undergraduate/master's degree from an Indian university
  • be a professional who is employed with a registered organisation in India

Non-eligibility: 

  • Google employees, and their spouses, children, and members of their households.
  • Students who are already supported by a comparable industry award (Government or non-profit organisation funding is exempt).
  • Past awardees from the Ph.D. Fellowship program.
Benefits

The selected candidates will receive a fellowship in the following ways:

For early-stage Ph.D. students

  • Up to 4-year fellowship
  • USD 50,000 (approximately ₹43,40,296) to cover stipend and other research-related activities, and travel expenses (including overseas travel)
  • Google research mentor

For late-stage Ph.D. students

  • 1 year fellowship
  • USD 10,000 (approximately ₹8,68,121) to recognise research contributions, cover stipend and other research-related activities, and travel expenses (including overseas travel)
  • Google research mentor
Documents
  • Short (one-page) resume/CV of the student applicant's primary PhD program advisor
  • Available transcripts (mark sheets) from the first year/semester of your Bachelor's degree to date.

  • 2-3 letters of recommendation from people familiar with your work (at least one from your thesis advisor if you're a current PhD student).

How can you apply?

Eligible candidates can apply by following these steps:
Step 1:

Step 2: Click the 'Register' button and fill in the required registration details. 
(Note:- If already registered, log in using Gmail/Mobile number/Email ID.)
Step 3: Get nominated by your eligible university during the application period; direct applications aren't accepted.
Step 4: Contact your department or graduate school for your university's internal nomination process.
Step 5: If nominated, your university submits the application for you via the portal (available on the program page when the period starts).
