About The Program

Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program 2019-20, USA under the overall Fulbright program will bring approximately 54 international teachers to the U.S. for a semester. The program will provide with a unique opportunity to pursue individual or group projects, take courses for professional development at a host university and observe and share their expertise with teachers and students at the host university or local primary and secondary schools. A cultural enrichment, mentoring and support will be provided throughout the program. The selected teachers will receive multiple awards such as academic fee waiver, housing, insurance and other benefits.

To apply for the scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be a citizen of India and reside in India
  • Live and teach in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli
  • Hold at least a Bachelor's degree
  • Be a full-time teacher teaching any subject at any level (primary, middle, secondary or senior secondary)
  • Have completed at least 5 years of full-time teaching experience at the start of the program
  • Be a primary and secondary level library media specialist, guidance counsellor, curriculum specialist, special education coordinator and administrator who spends at least 50% of his/her time teaching or working directly with students
  • Demonstrate good English language competence
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continue teaching after completion of the program

Note: Ministry of Education officials, full-time principals or educational administrators, University faculty, private English Language tutors, are not eligible.

  • Coverage for accident and sickness medical insurance coverage (does not cover pre-existing conditions)
  • Transportation to the local school if necessary
  • A daily allowance for incidentals during the university academic program
  • A baggage and technology allowance

Note: The program fellows can compete for small grants awards for essential teaching materials, to offer follow-on training for other teachers and other activities after returning to home country.

Step 1: Visit the website link and register as a new applicant.
Step 2: Login to apply for the "Fullbright DAI Program Application".
Step 3: Provide personal details such as name, date of birth etc.
Step 4: Provide contact information such as phone, email, address etc.
Step 5: Provide information on current teaching assignments, current educator position, demography etc.
Step 6: Answer the essay questions and provide other details.
Step 7: Submit the application form.

Selection Criteria

The scholars will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Demonstration of a commitment to elementary or secondary education
  • Demonstration of leadership potential
  • Professional and educational experience and achievements
  • The potential for developing long-term linkages between U.S. and Indian educational institutions and schools
  • Well prepared for an intensive U.S.-based training program with very limited free time for personal travel or sightseeing
  • Willing and having the capacity to work and live collaboratively with international peers to foster a positive learning community for professional development
  • Having articulated ideas for applying program experience for improving primary or secondary education in the home country upon return
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and effectively
  • Adequate English language skills to manage coursework, develop lesson plans and team-teach in U.S. schools
Terms and Conditions
  • Dependents can accompany the program participants. 
  • Grantees are responsible for all costs for family members while in the U.S. and must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds available to support their family while in the U.S.
  • USIEF will provide fee vouchers toward the TOEFL exam. The nominee should possess an internet-based TOEFL score of 61 or an IELTS score of 6.5.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are members of or who work with students from under-served communities or traditionally underrepresented groups including but not limited to women, racial, ethnic and religious minorities, people with disabilities, the LGBTI community. 
  • Preference will also be given to applicants who have had few or no opportunities to travel to the U.S., and who have not previously received a Fulbright grant.
  • Teachers who have participated in the Teaching Excellence and Achievement (TEA) program may apply for Fulbright DAI.

Q. How many letters of reference/recommendation do I need to submit?
A.  Depending on the grant category, applicants are advised to request two to three referees to send in their recommendations or complete those online by the application due date.

Q. How long does the review process take?
A
. The review process takes three to four months after the application deadline.

Q. What does the selection process look like?
A
. The subject experts will review all eligible applications. The applicants are recommended by the subject experts to appear for an interview in person with the USIEF National Selection Committee in New Delhi.

Q. Is there a preferred age for these fellowships?
A.
 Fellowship categories do not have age limits/age preferences. 

Q. I may be travelling during the listed interview dates. Would it be possible to make a telephone interview?
A.
  If shortlisted for an interview, the applicants must appear in person for the interview at the USIEF office in New Delhi.
