Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program 2022-23 is an initiative by the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) for full-time teachers. The program will provide a unique opportunity to pursue individual or group projects, take courses for professional development at a host university and observe and share their expertise with teachers and students at the host university or local primary and secondary schools. Cultural enrichment, mentoring and support will be provided throughout the program. The selected teachers will receive variable awards such as academic program fee waiver, housing, insurance, visa support and other benefits.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible, an applicant must - 

    • Be a citizen of India and reside in India
    • Live and teach in the states Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, West Bengal, Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh, hhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli 
    • Hold at least a Bachelor's degree
    • Be a full-time teacher teaching any subject at any level (primary, middle, secondary or senior secondary)
    • Demonstrate good English language competence
    • Demonstrate a commitment to continue teaching after completion of the program

     

    Note - Ministry of Education officials, full-time principals or educational administrators, University faculty, private English Language tutors, are not eligible. The Fulbright DAI program is not designed for PhD research.

    Benefits

    • Housing (generally shared with other program fellows) and meals
    • Coverage for accident and sickness medical insurance (does not cover pre-existing conditions)
    • Transportation to the local school if necessary
    • A daily allowance for incidentals during the university academic program
    • A baggage and technology allowance

     

    Note - The program fellows can compete for small grants awards for essential teaching materials, to offer follow-on training for other teachers and other activities after returning to the home country.

    How can you apply?

    Eligible candidates can apply for the scholarship by following the steps mentioned below:

    Step 1: Click on the 'Apply Now' button.
    Step 2:
    Navigate to the 'Application Procedure' section and click on the first link.
    Step 3: For first time users, click on the 'Create an Account' link, whereas registered users click on Login.
    Step 4:
    To register for an account, enter an email address, first and last name, birthday and click on 'Continue'.
    Step 5:
    Enter the pin received through email to activate the account and create a password to complete the process.
    Step 6: After successfully creating the account, log in using valid credentials.
    Step 7: Fill in the required information step-by-step and upload the required documents s in PDF format as required​.
    Step 8: Fill in the grant and additional information and submit the form.

Selection Criteria

The fellows will be selected through a merit-based open competition based on the following criteria - 

  • Demonstration of a commitment to elementary or secondary education
  • Demonstration of leadership potential
  • Professional and educational experience and achievements
  • Potential for developing long-term linkages between US and Indian educational institutions and schools
  • Preparedness for an intensive US-based training program with very limited free time for personal travel or sightseeing
  • Willingness and capacity to work and live collaboratively with international peers to foster a positive learning community for professional development
  • Articulated ideas for applying program experience for improving primary or secondary education in the home country upon return
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and effectively
  • Adequate English language skills to manage coursework, develop lesson plans and team-teach in US schools
Terms and Conditions
  • Teacher trainers working with elementary or secondary pre-service or in-service teachers are eligible to apply.
  • The candidates should plan to continue working in elementary or secondary education for at least five years after the conclusion of the program.
  • Primary and secondary level library media specialists, guidance counselors, curriculum specialists, special education coordinators, and administrators who spend at least fifty percent of their time teaching or working directly with students may also apply to the program.
  • Dependents can accompany the program participants. 
  • Grantees are responsible for all costs for family members while in the US and must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds available to support their family while in the US.
  • USIEF will provide fee vouchers toward the TOEFL exam for applicants who are selected as nominees and have not taken the IELTS or TOEFL test. The nominee should possess an internet-based TOEFL score of 61 or an IELTS score of 6.5.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are members of or who work with students from under-served communities or traditionally underrepresented groups including but not limited to women, racial, ethnic and religious minorities, people with disabilities, the LGBTI community. 
  • Preference will also be given to applicants who have had few or no opportunities to travel to the US, and who have not previously received a Fulbright grant.
  • Teachers who have participated in the Teaching Excellence and Achievement (TEA) program may apply for Fulbright DAI.
  • The shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by a committee in New Delhi which will select nominees whose names will be forwarded to Washington, D.C. for further consideration.
  • Please do not send the paper copy of the application form.
