About The Program

The Data for Social Good Hackathon 2021-22 is a competition presented by Telangana State Innovation Cell Foundation, Government of Telangana, in collaboration with the Data Analytics and Computational Social Science (DACSS) Program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The hackathon is designed for those students who are interested in developing approaches based on data analytics for tracking and monitoring India’s progress (with a special focus on Telangana) towards tackling Sustainable Development Goals. 

The virtual hackathon is designed for those who are interested in telling stories with data and to develop approaches based on data analytics and visualization for tackling Sustainable Development Goals. The winning candidate or group will be provided with the opportunity to present their solutions at a virtual research symposium.

EligibilityDeadline Date: Closed

The Hackathon is open for students across India who are pursuing either:

  • B.Tech/M.Tech/BCA/MCA/PGDM (all specializations) OR 
  • B.Sc./M.Sc. (Computers, Electrical, Electronics, Communications) OR 
  • Polytechnic course (Computers, Electrical, Electronics, Communications) OR 
  • A course in any of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) or Social Sciences OR 
  • Be in the policy-related fields 
  • They must be in the pre-final or final year/3rd or 4th year of studies
Benefits
  • The winning teams will be provided with a unique opportunity to present their solution at a virtual research symposium organized by the Data Analytics and Computational Social Sciences program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

  • The winning teams will be provided with a unique opportunity to present their findings to the relevant Telangana state government departments and help them formulate decisions and policies.

Hackathon Dates – 28th September 2021 to 1st October 2021

Selection Criteria

The selection of the winner will be entirely dependent on the performance in the Hackathon competition.

  • Participants can join as individuals or as teams with a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 4.
  • Participation in the Hackathon challenge is free for all.
  • This event does not require any physical presence as it is completely online.
  • The individuals or teams participating in the hackathon can only select 1 problem statement to solve during the event.
  • The key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include - 
    • No poverty
    • Zero hunger
    • Good health and well-being
    • Quality education
    • General inequality
    • Clean water and Sanitation
    • Climate action
