About The Program

COAL PRIZE 2018 invites applications from artists working in the field of visual arts. The objective of the prize is to honour the projects related to environmental issues in the field of visual arts.

Any artist in the field of visual arts is eligible to apply.

Benefits
  • Winner of the prize will get the cash reward of EUR 5,000.
  • Winning artist will also be offered a residency at the Belval estate (Ardennes), a property of the François Sommer Foundation.
  • An additional financial support will be provided for artistic production to the artist.
  • The work of 9 runners-up will also be honoured by COAL in the award ceremony to be held at Paris in October 2018.
Documents

An applicant must provide:

  • Description of his/her proposed project, detailing its artistic dimension along with its relevance towards environmental issues.
  • Two high-definition visuals showcasing the project.
  • A note on the technical aspects of the project including the terms of construction and means of production.
  • An estimated budget.
  • An updated CV along with a portfolio.

Selection Criteria

The applicant will be judged on the basis of artistic value, the relevance of the project (understanding of theme), originality, pedagogy, social and participative approaches, eco-design and feasibility.

  • The COAL prize only supports art projects in progress with no intention to cover all production cost.
  • By entering this competition, applicants will authorise COAL to publish, reproduce and display their entry for any purpose linked to the promotion and communication of the Coal project, via all platforms and media, in all countries, for the legal duration of the copyright.
  • Entries submitted but not selected will be held in the archives of the Coal organization. However, the submitted material will be the property of their authors.
