Charles Wallace India Trust Short Research Grants 2023-24 is an opportunity offered by Charles Wallace India Trust (CWIT)* with the support of the British Council India to research scholars between the age group of 25 and 45 years. However, professionals working in the arts or heritage conservation sectors may also apply to do short-term research. The selected scholars will receive £1,500 towards the costs of their stay in the UK.

*Charles Wallace India Trust (CWIT) gives grants to Indians in the early or middle stages of their careers who are living in India and working or studying in the arts, heritage conservation or the humanities.

  • Charles Wallace India Trust Short Research Grants 2023-24

To be eligible, an applicant must -

    • be an Indian citizen living in India
    • be between 25 and 45 years of age
    • be proficient in English
    • have completed the studies and have 4 or more years of research or experience in their specialization, or be in the final stages of their doctorate
    • not have received a CWIT grant within the previous 5 years

A total of 15-20 scholars will receive £1,500 towards the costs of their stay in the UK. The funding is usually enough for a period of about three weeks. The grants are payable in the UK and do not cover international travel costs.

    • The grantees will also be expected to cover their own travel costs within India and are required to obtain the appropriate level of insurance coverage for travel and medical emergencies.
    • Applicants planning to stay in the UK for more than three weeks will need to supplement the CWIT grant with other funding e.g a grant from the Indian Council for historical research.
    • CWIT also offers a few grants each year to Indian students in the final stages of their doctorates at UK universities who can give an assurance that they intend to return to India.
    • The grants will be small (£600) and intended to help fill a funding gap. To be successful in securing a CWIT grant the applicant will require to show evidence of funding/income from other sources.
    • A brief CV including postal address and email with applicant's photo
    • Emergency name and contact details in India
    • A clear statement of what the applicant wants to achieve in the UK and for academic researchers what sources they wish to consult in not more than 2-3 pages
    • An indication of how much time the applicant wishes to spend in the UK
    • Names and addresses of two referees who know the applicant's work well and who have agreed to be referees
    • An assurance that the applicants are within the eligible age range and they have not received a CWIT grant within the last 5 years
