About The Program

On the occasion of its 30th anniversary, Castle Craig Hospital has launched Castle Craig Annual Essay Competition 2018 for students of medicine, psychology, nursing, psychotherapy and social work across the globe. Applicants can contribute their views on the topic of addiction by submitting an essay which may rely on personal experiences, objective opinions or a general outlook.

The students can choose from one of these three essay questions:

  • Is addiction to a drug a brain disease?
  • What is the role of psychotherapy in realizing and sustaining recovery from addiction?
  • ‘Society holds the solution to addiction because social problems are the main cause.’  Discuss.

EligibilityDeadline Date: Closed

Students of medicine, psychology, nursing, psychotherapy and social work can participate in the competition by submitting their essay as academic papers including references.

Benefits
  • 1st Prize: GBP 1,000
  • Up to 5 runner-up prizes of GBP 250
  • Notable submissions will receive a written commendation
How can you apply?

Please follow these steps to participate in the competition:

  • Step 1: Click here to download the entry form.
  • Step 2: Fill the form as per the guidelines.
  • Step 3: Write your essay on one of the three questions specified in the form. 
  • Step 4: Submit the form along with your essay via one of these two steps:
    • Email the duly filled form and your essay (in Microsoft Word document format only) to l.douglas@cas tlecraig.co.uk.
      Or
    • Post the duly filled form along with the hard copy of your essay to Essay Competition, Castle Craig, Blyth Bridge, West Linton, Peeblesshire, Scotland, UK, EH46 7DH.
Important Dates
  • Submission deadline: December 30, 2018
  • Winner announcement: April 30, 2019
  • Online publishing of the winning essay: May 1, 2019
Important documents
Terms and Conditions
  • The essay should be 3000 words or less (not including title page, bibliography or references).
  • A separate title page should be included with the essay title, writer's name, university or college and the full word count.
  • All pages of the essay must include the essay title as a header, and the page number as a footer (page numbering to begin on the first page of the essay - not the title page).
  • A parent/guardian should review and sign the Contest Release Form on behalf of a minor.
