The following applicants are eligible to apply for the scholarship:
- Should be applying for a PhD
- Should not have attained the last qualification more than 8 years ago
- Should not have been working on his/her project for more than 6 months

Benefits
The PhD fellowships will be granted for 24 months which can be extended once for a maximum of 12 months. The selected fellows will receive the following benefits:
- Monthly allowance of EUR 1,550
- Country related adjustment of living allowance of up to EUR 1,700
- Research related expense allowance (e.g. books, travel expenses, etc.) of EUR 150 per month
- A spouse allowance of EUR 200
- Child allowance of EUR 200 per child and/or childcare allowance of up to EUR 500 depending on the personal situation
- In addition, fellowship holders can apply for travel allowances to present their research projects at international scientific conferences, to participate in methods courses, or to perform research in cooperating laboratories.

Step 2: Log in with the respective credentials and activate the candidate account.
Step 3: Fill in the application form with the required details.
Step 4: Attach the necessary document along with the application.
Step 5: Submit the application.
Selection Criteria
The applications are assessed and evaluated by the scientists in the Board of Trustees and the external peer reviewer based on the following criteria:
- Applicant's achievements to date (grades and curriculum vitae)
- Scientific quality, e.g. originality and inventiveness, of the proposed PhD project
- Scientific standard of the laboratory in which the project is to be pursued
Terms and Conditions
- Studies on the course of diseases or the treatment of symptoms and botanical and prokaryotic investigations unless they are of general biological importance are not eligible for the fellowship program.
- If the fellow begins to work on his/her PhD before taking up the fellowship, that period will be deducted from the maximum extension period.
- In the event of illness, BIF usually continues payments for 2 months, after which time assistance would cease.
- The institute does not intervene in the work of fellows.
- The fellows are obligated to make the proper use of allocated funds while adhering to the rules of good scientific practice.
- The fellowships are usually exempted from tax in Germany.
