Selection Criteria

The fellowship selection is a mixture of art and science, the application of the candidate is reviewed by the Center's senior staff and faculty directors and their board of directors make final decisions about Berkman Klein Center fellowship appointments.  The review is based on a number of factors some of them include:

  • The Center’s needs and composition of the fellowship class
  • Achievements that are relevant to the candidate. For example, the institution does not expect practitioners developing a new idea to have numerous publications, although they will expect that of an academic.
  • Additionally, less tangible but equally important traits are considered including intellectual rigour, vision, research skills, curiosity, openness, kindness, commitment to the public interest and much more.
Terms and Conditions

The personal statement of the candidate should answer the following questions:

  • What is the research the candidate proposes to conduct during a fellowship year?
    • Outline the methods which might inform the candidate's research.
    • Tell us about the public interest and/or the communities the candidate aims to serve through his/her work.
    • Describe the problem the candidate intends to solve.
  • Why is the Berkman Klein Center the right place for the candidate to do his/her work? Please share thoughts on:
    • How the opportunity to engage colleagues from different backgrounds with a range of experiences and training in unfamiliar disciplines might stimulate the candidate's work?
    • Which perspectives the candidate might seek out to get help filling in underdeveloped areas of his/her research?
    • What kinds of topics and skills the does candidate seek to learn with the Center that is outside of his/her primary research focus and expertise?
    • The skills, connections and insights the candidates are uniquely suited to contribute to the Center’s community and activities.
  • How does the candidate's personal background inform and influence his/her research?

Terms and conditions:

  • Applicants will be asked in the Application Tracker to select two of the following topic areas explored at the Berkman Klein Center that resonate with their interests and research. This initial selection will help the institute to support building connections among fellows and between fellows and ongoing work but is of course not meant to constrain future research and exploration. The topic areas from which to choose:
    • Education, Libraries & Digital Humanities; Ethics and Governance of AI; Governance of Technology & the Internet; Internet Health; Justice, Equity & Inclusion; Media, Democracy & Public Discourse; Privacy & Security; and Technology & the Law.
  • Questions related to stipending will be answered directly within the Application Tracker system. Please describe non-Berkman Klein funding or employment that might support during the course of the fellowship, and provide other information that would allow us to assess the need for funding.
