About The Program

The Award of Gandhi Fellowship 2024 is an opportunity provided by the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti (GSDS)* to postgraduate students. The main goal of the fellowship is to inspire and empower young people to understand and contribute to Gandhian principles by involving them in activities such as undertaking extensive tours and fieldwork to collect data on senior Gandhians and Gandhian organisations. Selected students will receive a monthly stipend of up to ₹20,000 and other awards.

*Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti (GSDS) is a national memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi with the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India as its Chairman. The overarching goal of the Samiti is to take forward the philosophy and thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi to all cross-sections of the society.

  • have completed their postgraduate studies, preferably in the field of humanities and social sciences
  • be passionate and committed towards social change

Selected candidates will receive:-

Eligible candidates can apply for the fellowship through the following steps:-

Step 4: Fill in the required information.

Selection Criteria

Academic achievement, leadership potential, and a thorough comprehension of Gandhian philosophy will all be considered in the selection process. Candidates pursuing research degrees or with fieldwork experience will be given preference, as will those who speak more than one Indian language in addition to English.
The shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interaction with a selection committee under the chairmanship of the director.

  • A total of 5 fellowships will be provided to eligible candidates.
  • The fellowship will be initially offered for three months.
  • The fellowship tenure can be extended up to a maximum of two years, subject to performance and recommendation of the competent authority.
  • Fellows will be tasked with travelling the country to visit Gandhians and like-minded organisations, collecting valuable information on the same in a prescribed format. This will be used to create a pan-Indian database on Gandhian Institutes/Senior Gandhians.
  • Fellows will identify and obtain the archival materials relevant to Mahatma Gandhi from various Gandhian institutes and explore the possibilities for collaboration with such institutions.
  • Fellows will document their experiences through written reports, audio-visual content, and other mediums, creating a comprehensive repository of information on the organisations visited.
