About The Program

The International Mathematical Union and the Niels Henrik Abel Board invites applications from professional mathematicians of all developing nations for Abel Visiting Scholar Program 2018 to visit an internationally acclaimed research collaborator for one month. 

 

EligibilityDeadline Date: Closed

To be eligible for the scholarship, an applicant must -

  • Belong to a developing nation.
  • Hold a PhD degree in Mathematics at the time of application. 
  • Be below 40 years of age. 

Note: The applications from women mathematicians are highly encouraged. 

 

How can you apply?

Eligible candidates can apply for the scholarship online through following steps -
Step 1: Download the application form from here
Step 2: Fill in all required details. 
Step 3: Prepare all necessary documents.
Step 4: Attach all documents along with application form in one pdf file. 
Step 5: Email the form to abel-visiting-scholar-program@mathunion.org and CC to cdc.grants@mathunion.org with the subject - "Application for the Abel Visiting Scholar Program".

Award Details

The grant covers the following expenses of applicants for one month -

  • Cost of travelling to the host institution. 
  • Expenses of food up to USD 30 per day. 
  • Accommodation expenses of up to USD 1200 for one month. 
  • Insurance of travel health. 
  • Cost of visa
  • Local transportation of up to USD 100 for one month. 

Note: The total amount that is covered is up to USD 5000 per grantee. 

Documents required

  • A CV comprising the list of all recent publications
  • A research plan
  • Letter of recommendation(In case, the international research partner does not write the letter of recommendation, the applicants should include statement from host institution that approves the research plan. 
  • PhD certificate
  • Official invitation of international research partner from the institution. 
  • An estimation of budget. 
  • Statement of current employment's position/status duly signed as well as stamped by the employer. (It should clearly state the duration of employment.)
  • Form of bank information. 

Note: If the applicant is staying for more than a month, they need to provide a proof of matching funds for their living costs for host institutions. 

Selection criteria

The selection of applicants will be based on the added value/benefit offered to the home institution/country and the project quality.
