WTO Essay Award 2022 is an initiative by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) for young economists having a Ph.D. degree. The aim of the award is to promote high-quality research on trade policy and international trade cooperation and to reinforce the relationship between the WTO and the academic community. The selected author will receive a prize of CHF 5,000.

DeadlineClosed Eligibility To be eligible, an applicant must -
- Be an Australian/domestic student or International student
- Possess or be engaged in the completion of a Ph.D. degree OR
- Be no more than two years past a Ph.D. defense (if the applicant is over 30 years of age)
Note - In the case of co-authored papers, this above-mentioned requirement will be applied to all authors.
Benefits The winning essay will receive the following benefits -
- A prize of CHF 5,000 (Note - The prize will be divided equally in the case of co-authored papers.)
- The winning paper is to be officially announced at the annual meeting of the European Trade Study Group (ETSG), which is the largest conference specializing in international trade
- Funding to the winning author for attending the annual meeting
Documents - Essay (Not exceeding 15,000 words)
- A Curriculum Vitae (CV) of the author(s), specifying
- Current affiliation(s)
- Academic institution awarding the Ph.D.
- Year (or the expected year) of the Ph.D.
- Date of birth of the author(s)

Selection Criteria
The authors will be selected by an academic selection panel.
Terms and Conditions
- The award ceremony will take place in September 2022 in Bern, Switzerland.
- The Economic Research and Statistics Division of the WTO Secretariat will shortlist eligible papers.
- The winning essay will be published in the WTO Working Paper Series. It is the responsibility of the author(s) to endeavour to secure publication of the contribution in a journal.
