National Law University (Project 39A) Internship Programme 2023 is an opportunity offered by the National Law University, New Delhi to students enrolled in the undergraduate or postgraduate programme in the law, humanities, social sciences, management or media and communications. The objective of the internship is to provide meaningful exposure to the complexities and nuances of the criminal justice system in India. The selected interns will be paid a stipend of ₹10,000 (Rupees Ten Thousand Only) for every four-week period of internship undergone. Interns on a part-time internship will be paid a stipend of ₹5,000 (Rupees Five Thousand Only) for every four-week period of internship undergone.

*Project 39A is inspired by Article 39-A of the Indian Constitution, a provision that furthers the intertwined values of equal justice and equal opportunity by removing economic and social barriers. Using empirical research to re-examine practices and policies in the criminal justice system, Project 39A aims to trigger new conversations on legal aid, torture, forensics, mental health in prisons, and the death penalty.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible, an applicant must:

    • be enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate programme in Law, Humanities, Social Sciences, Social Work, Management or Media 

    Note: The internship is open to students in India and other countries. Those enrolled in other programmes may apply but preference will be given to those enrolled in programmes listed above.

    Benefits

    The selected interns will receive ₹10,000 per month for the duration of the internship. And, interns on a part-time internship will be paid a stipend of ₹5,000 per month for the duration of the internship.

    How can you apply?

    Eligible candidates can apply for the internship by following the below-mentioned steps:
    Step 1: Click the ‘Apply Now’ button below.
    Step 2: Click on the 'Register' button on the right-hand side of the dashboard and fill in the required details to 'Register'. (Note: If already registered, log in using the registered email ID)
    Step 3: Read the details carefully, and navigate to the 'Application Process' section at the bottom.
    Step 4: Fill in the required details, upload the necessary documents and submit.

Important Dates

The candidates can apply for the internship on a rolling basis from March 2023 to March 2024.

Selection Criteria

The interns will be selected based on the fulfilment of the eligibility criteria.

  • Project 39A reserves the right not to fill internship positions.
  • All applicants are required to apply two months prior to the proposed month of internship.
  • While applications for part-time interns are considered, there is a strong preference in favour of full-time interns.
  • Interns for a specific month will be finalized and intimated 6 weeks before the commencement of the month. Only successful applicants will be contacted. 
  • Project 39A will not bear travel and accommodation expenses incurred by the interns during the period of the internship. 
  • Project 39A works on behalf of all prisoners sentenced to death, regardless of the offence involved.
  • Students based in Delhi interested in a part-time internship while pursuing their undergraduate or postgraduate courses may follow the procedure outlined above, specifying in the relevant dropdown their interest in applying for such a position.
  • Physical internships for interns who are based in Delhi have resumed. Students also have the option to travel to Delhi to participate in a physical internship if they are not from Delhi (though this is not mandatory).
