Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships for Specialized Training 2022 is an opportunity for students who have finished their 12th standard and are applying for specialized training in specific fields. This scholarship is an initiative by Japan to invite students internationally and provide them with the opportunity to conduct complete their graduation in Japan. The selected scholars will have the opportunity to receive JPY 117,000 per month and additional benefits.

DeadlineClosed Eligibility To be eligible, an applicant must -
- Be 18 years of age or older at the time of admission to a university in Japan
- Be born between on or after April 2, 1998
- Have completed at least 12 years of schooling in countries other than Japan* OR
- Have completed studies at a school equivalent to a Japanese upper secondary school in countries other than Japan* OR
- Have successfully passed an academic qualification examination that is equivalent to the completion of 12 years of schooling in countries other than Japan*
- Be enrolled in a postsecondary course at a specialized training college at the time of application
*Note - The applicants who will meet the above condition by March 2023 are eligible.
Benefits The selected scholars will receive the following benefits -
- The selected scholars will have the opportunity to receive JPY 117,000 per month.
- A supplemental regional allowance of 2,000 yen or 3,000 yen per month will be added to the monthly scholarship amount for the grantees studying or conducting research in specially designated regions.
- Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition at specialized training colleges and preparatory educational institutions will be paid by MEXT.
- MEXT will stipulate the travel schedule and route, and provides an airline ticket to grantees who will arrive in Japan during the specified period.

Documents - Health Certificate signed by a physician attesting that the applicant has no physical or mental conditions hindering the applicant’s study in Japan
- Academic transcript(s) for all school years of last school/university attended
- Certificate(s) of graduation of school/university attended
- Recommendation letter from either a class teacher or principal of last school attended
- Certificate of university enrollment qualification examination
- Medical certificate
- Certificate of enrollment
- Certificate of language proficiency

How can you apply? Follow the steps below to apply for the scholarship:

Step 2: Coordinate with the consulates to start an application procedure.
Step 3: Download the application form.
Step 4: Attach the necessary documents.
Step 5: Submit the application form with the documents to the respective Japanese consulates.For students residing in the remaining states and union territories, the application must be sent to - Embassy of Japan, 50-G, Shantipath, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi - 110021.
For students residing in Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana applications must be sent to - Consulate General of Japan in Chennai, No 12/1 Cenetoph Road, 1st Street, Teynampet, Chennai 600018

Selection Criteria
- The Japanese diplomatic missions will conduct the First Screening of applicants by means of an examination of submitted application documents, written academic examinations and interviews
- Subjects of Written Academic Examinations (to be undertaken by all applicants): Japanese, English, and Mathematics
- Calculators and other devices may not be used during written examinations

Terms and Conditions
- The level of training is the undergraduate level leading to a certificate.
- The applicants who have successfully passed an academic qualification examination that is equivalent to the completion of 12 years of schooling in countries other than Japan must be 18 years of age or older at the time of admission to a university in Japan.
- The duration of the scholarship is 3 years from April which includes 1 year of Japanese language training period.
- A maximum of 18 scholarships will be awarded depending on applicants' written test scores.
- The amount is subject to change depending on the annual budget of each year.
- The scholarship payments will be transferred to the bank account of Japan Post Bank (JP Bank) which is supposed to be opened by each scholar after arrival in Japan.
- Scholars must enrol in National Health Insurance (Kokumin Kenko Hoken) upon arrival in Japan.
- The applicants must submit two application packets: one is a complete set of original documents and the other is a complete set of their copies. Ensure that there is no missing information in the application form when printing out. Write the document number from 1 to 8 in the upper right-hand corner of the first page for all the documents.
