Mid-career urban scholars are invited to apply for the International Fellowships, Urban-Studies Foundation, UK 2019 on theme pertinent to a better understanding of urban realities in the Global South. The fellowship covers the costs of a sabbatical period at a university of the candidate’s choice in the Global North or South. Preference may be given to candidates from least or low-income countries but middle income developing countries are not excluded. The purpose of the fellowship is to expand theoretical and empirical understanding of the major social, economic, political and other problems associated with the rapid processes of urban growth in the Global South. The fellowship is tenable for a period ranging between 3-9 months.

DeadlineClosed Eligibility To be eligible, the applicant must:
- Have obtained a PhD in a relevant subject awarded within the last 10 years. Relevant disciplines include geography, political science, economics, sociology, demography, planning (this list is not exhaustive)
- Have originality and the quality in the proposed sabbatical research
- Have a reasonable proposed budget
- Qualify the previous academic achievements
- Provide evidence of their achievements to date, e.g. publishing papers, giving papers at international conferences, etc.
- Be the resident or national of a country in the Global South and have an affiliation with a university or other higher education institution there, e.g. as a lecturer
Note: Preference may be given to candidates from least or low-income countries.
Benefits The financial assistance rendered under this fellowship includes the following -
- Cost of accommodation and subsistence needs
- Return air-fare of economy class
- Assistance towards the research cost
Documents The applications must comprise of the following documents:
- A 3-page CV listing academic achievements and publications
- Letter from the prospective mentor stating their willingness to act as a mentor to the fellow and indicating the suitability of the host institution for the proposed sabbatical study
- A short CV from the mentor (3 pages maximum)
- An outline of the planned research, demonstrating its originality, rigour and value to the field of urban studies (1200 words max)
- A statement of the intended form of research output (e.g. articles, a monograph, etc.) (300 words max)
- Designation of the northern or southern institution where the fellowship will be pursued and reasons for its selection (300 words max)
- The name of the urban scholar at that institution willing to act as a mentor to the fellow during the fellowship and a statement of how their expertise will support and facilitate the proposed research
- Draft budget listing main research, travel and living cost items for the fellow
- Two academic referee names

Terms and Conditions
- There should be a match or clear compatibility of research interests between the Fellow and mentor.
- The research environment in the host institution should be suitable to stimulate and support the fellow's research.
- Fellowships should begin no later than 1 year after the application deadline (i.e. by 6th May 2020).
- Applicants are expected to be notified of an outcome normally within four weeks of the application deadline.
