IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program 2022 is an initiative by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) doctoral degree holders. The aim of the program is to nominate highly motivated and mathematically talented students from developing countries who plan to complete a doctoral degree in a developing country, including their own home country. Nominees must have a consistently good academic record from the high school level and must be seriously interested in pursuing a career in research and teaching in mathematics. The selected fellows will receive grants up to USD 10,000 per year.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible, an applicant must - 

    • Be a resident or citizen of a developing country
    • Be either already enrolled in a recognized doctoral program or pre-accepted to join a doctoral program in the first academic year after the time of selection at a recognized university or a research institution*
    • Have a thesis advisor and a research project

     

    *Note - The host institution must be either a recognized university or a research institution in one of the developing countries as defined by IMU.

    Benefits

    The fellowship can cover the entire period of the doctoral program up to four years of the student (nominee)The following costs up to a maximum of USD 10,000 per year can be covered by the grant - 

    • Full tuition fee
    • Accommodation expenses 
    • Travel expenses to the host institution (if different from the home country)
    • Basic living expenses will depend on the cost of living of the country in which the student will study his/ her doctoral program

    • Nominee letter of motivation, research project and future plans of the student

    • PhD Supervisor declaration
    • Nominee (student) declaration

    • Scanned copy of student (nominee) passport

    • Budget of total expenses requested
    • PhD supervisor curriculum vitae (CV)
    • Research project
    • Two letters of recommendation
    • Transcripts of coursework of the student
    How can you apply?

    The nominations for the fellowship should be made by a professional mathematician preferably the mentor of the nominee. Follow the steps below to apply for the scholarship -

    Step 1: Click on the "Apply Now" button and read all details carefully.
    Step 2: Navigate to 'Entry submission and documentation' and click on the given link.
    Step 3: Scroll down the page and click on 'Online Nomination Form'.
    Step 4: Fill in the required details, upload the relevant documents and submit.

Selection Criteria

The selection will be done by the CDC Breakout Graduate Fellowship Selection Committee.

Terms and Conditions
  • The fellowship is incompatible with any other scholarship.
  • The fellowship will be awarded starting from the time of selection in case of awardees already enrolled in a doctoral program, and from the time the awardee enrols in a recognized doctoral program otherwise.
  • Both nominations and accompanying documentation must be submitted in English only. If the documentation furnished were incomplete the entry would not be accepted for consideration.
  • The fellowship will be sanctioned for one year at a time and is renewable annually, based on satisfactory progress of the awardee and will cease to be awarded when the awardee completes the doctoral program or at the end of four years, whichever is earlier.
  • The awardees of the fellowship and their research supervisors will be asked to submit annual reports to IMU.
  • All awardees will be asked, upon the completion of the PhD programme, to submit a copy of the approved thesis and a final report on the work carried out to IMU.
