The Insitute of International Education (IIE) is offering Fellowships for Threatened Scholars to professors, researchers, and public intellectuals facing threats to their lives or careers. The applicants can be from any country, field, or discipline. The fellowships will support temporary academic positions at universities and other higher education institutions anywhere in the world where scholars can continue their academic work in safety. The selected candidate will receive fellowship worth up to USD 25,000 and other benefits.

The fellowship program aims to protect the lives, voices and ideas of scholars around the globe and has awarded fellowships to almost 800 scholars from 59 countries, arranging visiting academic positions at nearly 400 partner institutions in 44 countries.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible, the applicants must:

    • Be professors, researchers, or public intellectuals from any country, field etc.
    • Be facing or have recently fled from direct and immediate threats
    • Hold a PhD in their field (preferred)
    • Have extensive teaching or research experience at an institution of higher learning

    Note: Women and scholars from under-represented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

    How can you apply?

    Follow the steps below to apply for the fellowship:

    Step 1: Visit the application portal and read the instructions.
    Step 2: Compile an "Application coversheet" including CV, academic statement, personal statement, two academic references and two personal references.
    Step 3: The cover sheet should also include a copy of the PhD or higher degree and samples of the most current writing or research publications.
    Step 4: Submit the complete application with all the necessary application materials by mail to the srf@iie.org.
    Step 5: Alternatively, applications can also be sent by post to the following address:

Selection Criteria
  • During the application process, IIE-SRF conducts a thorough review of the scholar’s application materials and may contact the applicant’s referees as well as other sources, such as independent experts on the country of origin or the particulars of the reported threat. 
  • Applications to IIE-SRF, considered highly confidential, are not shared beyond the IIE-SRF program without the explicit permission of the applicant.
  • All applicants considered for fellowship support are screened against a database containing the names of individuals, groups, and entities that are on major global sanctions, money laundering, and law enforcement watch lists.

Terms and Conditions
  • The April 1st deadline is for consideration for June 2019.
  • Because of high demand, fellowships won't be given to everyone fulfilling the minimum eligibility criteria.
  • The fellowships are disbursed through partnering universities, colleges, or research institutes that provide a safe haven for IIE-SRF fellows to continue their academic work in safety.
  • IIE-SRF typically does not consider applications from individuals who have been displaced or in exile for more than two years, or who hold citizenship in a second country.
  • The fellowships are awarded quarterly.
