The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) in the UK and the Department for International Development (DFID) invites applications for its DFID Sponsored Commonwealth Shared Scholarships 2019 from graduates and postgraduates from the Commonwealth countries. The aim of the scholarship is to contribute to the development needs of Commonwealth countries by providing training for skilled and qualified professionals and academics and to contribute to UK higher education and foreign policy aims by encouraging collaboration and links.

  • DFID Sponsored Commonwealth Shared Scholarships 2019, UK
    DeadlineClosed
    Eligibility

The following students are eligible for the scholarship:

    • A citizen of or a candidate who has been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or is a British Protected Person
    • A permanent resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
    • Available to start the academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2019
    • Hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) standard or a second class degree
    • A relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)
    • Not have studied or worked for one (academic) year or more in a high-income country
    • Should be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship

Note: The CSC would not normally fund a second UK Master’s degree. If the candidates are applying for a second UK Master’s degree, they will need to provide a justification as to why they wish to undertake that study.

    Benefits

The selected scholars will receive the following benefits:

    • Approved airfare from the candidates home country to the UK and return at the end of the candidate's award.
    • Full tuition fee funded by the CSC.
    • A monthly stipend (living allowance) at the rate of GBP 1,084 or GBP 1,330 per month for those studying at the universities in the London metropolitan area.
    • Warm clothing allowance, where applicable paid and funded by the university.
    • Thesis grant towards the cost of preparing a thesis or dissertation, where applicable.
    • Study travel grant towards the costs of study-related travel within the UK or overseas.
    • Excess baggage allowance, up to an annual approved limit when returning home.
    • Reimbursement of the cost of mandatory tuberculosis (TB) test, where required for a visa application.
    • If the applicant is widowed, divorced, or a single parent, child allowance of GBP 465 per month for the first child, and GBP 114 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if the applicant is accompanied by his/her children and they are living with the applicant at the same address in the UK.

Note:  The CSC’s family allowances are intended to be only a contribution towards the cost of maintaining the applicants family in the UK. The true costs are likely to be considerably higher, and the candidate must be able to supplement these allowances in order to support any family members who come to the UK.

The following documents are required to be attached along with the application:

    • Proof of citizenship or refugee status
    • Full transcripts detailing all the applicants higher education qualifications (with certified translations if not in English)

Note: The applicant must submit referee details on the online application system. The university will request references from those stated on the applicant's application form only if the applicant is nominated or a reserve candidate at the nomination stage.

  • Each participating UK University will conduct its own recruitment process to select a specified number of candidates to be awarded Commonwealth Shared Scholarships. • The applicants are expected to start their award on the date stated in their Confirmation of Award.
