Deciphering solutions from the given clues help young minds develop cognitive skills such as making inferences, evaluating alternatives and drawing conclusion. Learning becomes enjoyable as different mental faculties are challenged and solving a crossword puzzle results in a sense of personal achievement, which is vital for personality development. Crossword is also an interesting and effective educational tool for students and teachers alike.

The CBSE Cryptic Crossword Contest 2016 is open to students studying in classes IX to XII. The contest is coordinated by Extra-C and would be conducted in two phases:

A. City Round: Inter-school contest in select cities during AprilAugust, 2016, as per the calendar attached at Annexure I.
Schools located in the vicinity of the designated cities may also participate. Each team consists of two students who would solve a written cryptic crossword puzzle in 60 minutes. Winners and the first runner-up teams would receive certificates and prizes.

B. National Round: A two- day event in New Delhi during November-December 2016.

  • The quarter final: A written cryptic crossword puzzle to be solved in 60 minutes by all the qualifying teams. Top 16 teams will qualify for the semi-finals.
  • The semi-final: The teams will be divided into 4 groups of four teams each who will participate in four separate, onstage cryptic crossword contests of 60 minutes duration based on a power point format.
  • The final: Top team from each semi-final and the two best runners-up compete in the onstage final.
  • Winners and runners-up are eligible for following prizes and all participants will receive certificates
  1. National Winners: Prizes worth Rs. 25,000 each, trophies and certificates
  2. National Runners-up: Prizes worth Rs. 15,000 each, trophies and certificates
  3. National Finalists (3rd and 4th): Prizes worth Rs. 10,000 each, trophies and certificates
  4. City Round Winners: Trophies and certificates

C. Other Information:

  • Registration, sample of the CBSE Cryptic Crossword Contest formats and other updates about various rounds of the contest can be accessed on: www.crypticsingh.com.
  • Second class rail fare for two students and one school escort will be reimbursed to the teams competing in the National Round.
