Yes, there is a travel grant and a Gift award. The selected scholars may also be recommended for a partial travel assistance - a maximum of Rs.50,000/- and gift award from our allied Trusts as may be decided at the sole discretion of the Trustees of the concerned Trusts. • Do you ask for any collateral security?

We do not insist on any collateral but applicants must have a guarantor. This is mandatory. The guarantor’s liability is on par with the candidate.

  • Who can be a guarantor and what is the guarantor’s responsibility?

The guarantor should normally be a parent(s)/guardian of the candidate. In the case of a married person, the guarantor can be a spouse or the parents-in-law. In case parent/s/spouse are unable to be a guarantor, a guardian or any relative (i.e. any member of the family such as brother, sister, father-in-law, mother-in-law, uncle, and aunt (both maternal and paternal) or any other relative may be the guarantor).  A non-relative may act as a guarantor subject to the Director’s approval and submitting relevant documents.

  • Do you have any format for the Statement of Purpose (SoP)?

No, we do not have any specific format but we do have expectations of a good SoP. The most important point to note is that the Statement of Purpose is NOT a Personal Statement, which means that candidates must make very few biographical references. What has to come through clearly is why you have made a certain academic choice.

The SoP, specifically addressed to the “Trustees of the J N Tata Endowment”, is an academic document in candidates’ own words, between 500 and 800.

  • Do you need a letter of recommendation (LoR) and is there any specific format?

Yes, we need only one LoR which can be written by a Professor of the college or university where the candidate is studying OR the Employer, in case the candidate is / was working. The LoR should be addressed to “The Trustees of the J. N. Tata Endowment”, and submitted online by the recommender; instructions for candidates & recommenders are available with the application form.

  • Do we have any questions bank available for an online test?

No, the online test is based on the lines of the Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA). This is not a subject-specific test and contains some numerical questions too but does not presume anything more than knowledge of arithmetic and does not involve difficult calculations.

  • When are the interviews held?

The interviews are held between late April and June.

  • Are the candidates reimbursed for their travel and accommodation for the scholarship interviews?

The candidates are not reimbursed for their travel and accommodation for the scholarship interviews. Candidates also have an option to take the video conference interview via Skype/Microsoft Teams/Zoom.
