DBT Tribal – Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). In a move aimed at streamlining and accelerating scholarship for tribal students, the Tribal Affairs Ministry has launched a web portal which will reduce the chances of manipulation and duplication of scholarship recipients.

Union Minister for Tribal Affairs  Mr Arjun Munda lunched the portal – ‘DBT Tribal’-  on Wednesday, June 12 in New Delhi.

With the new portal, the Tribal Affairs Ministry hopes to  make all scholarship disbursement directly to the bank accounts of beneficiaries.

The Tribal Ministry has been running a number of schemes to bridge the gap between the students of Scheduled Tribe (ST) and general category. ‘Top Class Education for ST Students’ is one such scheme run by the Centre to promote higher education among ST students. As many as 246 reputed institutions including IITs and IIMs, participate under this scheme. Every year, at least 1000 students receive benefit from this scholarship programme. Similarly, pre-matric and post-matric scholarship schemes are implemented through the state governments. Also, the National Fellowship scheme is run for MPhil and PhD programmes to promote research and innovation among the students of ST category.

The government also offers financial assistance to tribal students who wish to study abroad. Under this programme, as many as 30 candidates receive financial assistance every year to pursue higher education abroad.

According to officials, a total of 1.58 crore students have received scholarship benefits worth INR 7,900 Crores under the above-mentioned programmes across 31 states and Union territories in the last 5 years.

As per Naval Jit Kapoor, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, this portal will be a one-stop platform where the data of all the schemes run by either the Centre or state governments will be shared. And, the ministry can now monitor beneficiaries by their state, district, block and school. The portal will also help in tracking grievances of the applicants and the way it is addressed by the officials.
