What is Visiting Senior Fellowship Program 2017-18?

Visiting Senior Fellowship Program are for full-time research, and scholars are expected to reside in Washington and to participate in the activities of the Center throughout the fellowship period. Lectures, colloquia, and informal discussions complement the fellowship program. Each visiting senior fellow is provided with a study. In addition, visiting senior fellows who relocate to Washington are provided with housing in apartments near the Gallery, subject to availability. Visiting senior fellows have access to the notable resources represented by the art collections, the library, and the image collections of the National Gallery of Art, as well as to the Library of Congress and other specialized research libraries and collections in the Washington area.

How can you apply ?

Candidates for visiting senior fellowships must submit an online application that includes a proposal and a copy of one article or chapter of a book, to be submitted on or before the appropriate deadline. Two letters of recommendation in support of the application are required. Procedures for associate appointments are the same as those for the visiting senior fellowship program.

Visiting senior fellows may receive awards in three consecutive years but thereafter must wait three years before reapplying to the Center. Individuals may not apply for other Center fellowships while an application is pending or once a fellowship has been awarded. Visiting senior fellowships may not be postponed or renewed.

Q: May I apply for more than one fellowship?
A: No,you may not apply for other CASVA fellowships while an application is pending or once a fellowship has been awarded.

Q: Are non-US citizens eligible to apply for fellowships?
A: Senior and visiting senior fellowships are awarded without regard to age or nationality of applicants. Candidates for predoctoral dissertation fellowships and Ailsa Mellon Bruce Predoctoral Fellowships for Historians of American Art to Travel Abroad must be either US citizens or enrolled in a university in the US.

Q: What if my graduate program does not require foreign-language proficiency or language examinations?
A: The predoctoral dissertation fellowship program requires certification in two languages other than English before the application deadline. If your department waived or exempted you from a language examination, please send an inquiry stating your situation to the fellowship program at casva@onlineapplicationportal.com.

Q. How do I know if I am eligible for the predoctoral dissertation fellowships or the Ailsa Mellon Bruce Predoctoral Fellowships for Historians of American Art to Travel Abroad?
A. Please review the eligibility guidelines for each fellowship. You must be nominated by the chair of your graduate department of art history or other appropriate department.

Q. How does my graduate department chair nominate me for the predoctoral dissertation fellowships or the Ailsa Mellon Bruce Predoctoral Fellowships for Historians of American Art to Travel Abroad?
A. You may be nominated for only one fellowship program in any given academic year. Department chairs must submit to the Center one letter of nomination listing all candidates nominated by the department. The nomination letter is not considered a recommendation letter and is processed outside the online system. The nomination letter may be sent by e-mail as a PDF (casva@nga.gov) or by express mail (Fellowship Program, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, 2000B South Club Drive, Landover, MD 20785), and must be received by the application deadline. If your department chair has any questions, s/he should contact the fellowship program at casva@onlineapplicationportal.com.
