The Matsumae International Research Fellowship 2017-18 invites application from Ph.D. degree holders whose age should be 49 years or below. The objective of this program is to promote a deeper understanding of Japan. The selected applicants will receive a stipend for research and stay, insurance, air travel (a round-trip air ticket to/from Tokyo) and a lump sum on arrival.

    Eligibility
    • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree or be recognized by MIF as possessing equivalent academic qualifications
    • Must be 49 years old or less
    • Applicants must have sufficient conversational ability in English or Japanese
    • Applicants should not have been in Japan in the past or in the present
    • Applicants should have firm positions and professions in their home countries and should return to their countries on completion of their fellowship stay by MIF
    • Applicants must be of sound health and not physically handicapped in any way, which would not prevent from carrying out research in Japan

    The application can be done by email with the following steps:
    Step 1: Download

    Step 2: Fill all the details.
    Step 3: Attach all the documents.
    Step 4: Email it.

Terms and Conditions

Documents to be required:

  • Research project
  • Complete list of publications
  • A reprint of what the applicant considers to be his/her the most important publication
  • Personal History (Curriculum Vitae)
  • A letter of recommendation from the applicant's employer testifying to academic ability and achievements, and confirming the availability of study leave covering the grant period
  • Certified copies of the applicant's academic certificates (degrees of Ph.D., Master, Bachelor) issued by the university concerned. (These documents should be in English. If the certificate(s) is unavailable in English, please attach the translation in English)
  • An invitation letter with signature by the scientist of host institution confirming; the period of stay, the research project, the availability of research facilities/materials, and the arrangement of lodging accommodation, under MIF Fellowship Program

Period and number of fellowships:

  • Period: 3 to 6 months
  • Number of fellowships: 20 persons each year
