The Commonwealth Writers, a cultural initiative of the Commonwealth Foundation, invites applications for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize 2018 from the residents of Commonwealth regions (Africa, Asia, Canada & Europe, Caribbean and Pacific) who are of age 18 years or above.

    Eligibility criteria:

    • Indian students of the age 18 years or above are eligible to apply.

    Note: The writer need not have current residence in a Commonwealth country, provided he/she is a citizen of a Commonwealth country.

    How can you apply?

    The application can be submitted online only by following these steps:

    Step 1: Click here to apply online.
    Step 2: Fill in all the required details.
    Step 3: Upload your unpublished short fiction (written in 2,000-5000 words) in any of the given format (pdf, txt, rtf, doc, docx).
    Step 4: Then, click on 'Submit Entry' to submit your story.

Terms and Conditions

Award Details:

GBP 5,000 is for overall winner, while regional winners get GBP 2,500.

Prize Regions:

Asia: Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, India, Malaysia, Maldives, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka.

Entry rules:
1. Story must be written between 2,000 to 5,000 words.
2. Only online entry form will be accepted.
3. Only one entry per writer may be submitted for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize.
4. The submitted story must be original and should not have been published anywhere in full or in part before 1 May 2018. 
5. Previously submitted entries to the Commonwealth Short Story Prize are not eligible.
6. Stories should be submitted in English, with the following exceptions: writers from Mozambique who write in Portuguese, and writers who write in Bengali, Chinese, Kiswahili, Malay, Samoan, Tamil and who do not have an English translation of their story, may submit their stories in the original language. Translations of short stories written in other languages are eligible if submitted by the writer (not the translator) and provided the translator is also a citizen of a Commonwealth country.
7. Entries including those in translation must be made by the writer.
8. Entries should be in the PDF format. Use the title of the story as the file name. 
9. All entries should be submitted in Arial 12 point font and double line spacing. All pages should be numbered and include a header with the title of the story.
10. There are no restrictions on setting, genre or theme.
