Nikon Instruments Inc. invites entries for the Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition 2019 from those interested in photography through the microscope. Being organised since 1975, this competition aims to recognise and applaud the efforts of those involved in photography through the light microscope. Photomicrographers above 18 years of age can enter this competition and stand a chance to win prizes worth up to USD 3000.
Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition 2019
DeadlineClosed Eligibility The competition is open to anyone who is interested in photography through the microscope and is above 18 years of age. There is no restriction in terms of subject matter. Thus, any type of light microscopy technique is acceptable including:
- Phase contrast
- Polarized light
- Fluorescence
- Interference contrast
- Darkfield
- Confocal
- Deconvolution
- Mixed techniques
Note: The following are not eligible to enter the competition:
- Nikon employees
- Families of Nikon employees
- Contest judges
- Individuals engaged in the manufacture or sale of microscopes, related accessories or photographic equipment
Benefits The judges will select Top 20 prize winners who will receive the following benefits:
- 1st prize - USD 3,000
- 2nd prize - USD 2,000
- 3rd prize - USD 1,000
- 4th prize - USD 800
- 5th prize - USD 600
- 6th prize - USD 400
- 7th-10th prizes - USD 300 each
- 11th-20th Prizes - USD 200 each
- Honourable mentions - USD 100 each
- Images of distinction - Nikon backpack (or equivalent)
Note: Prizes for top 3 winners will be paid by check in US funds and other prizes will be paid by Visa gift card also in US funds. Winners will be responsible for all applicable taxes.

How can you apply? Follow the below steps to enter the competition:
Step 1: Visit the Nikon Small World Entry Portal.
Step 2: Read the competition rules before applying.
Step 3: Register as a new user or log in using existing credentials.
Step 4: Enter the relevant details and submit the entries on the portal.
Step 5: Submit the application.
Important Dates
- Application deadline: 30 April 2019
- Winners to be notified: By 15 August 2019
Selection Criteria
The prize winners will be selected by an independent panel of experts who are recognized authorities in the area of photomicrography and photography. The entries will be judged on the basis of the following:
- Originality
- Informational content
- Technical proficiency
- Artistic and visual impact
Terms and Conditions
- The image size should be between 3 and 100 MB.
- Files must be in jpeg, png, psd or tiff format.
- Former prize winners will be ineligible to win the first prize in three contests immediately following the content they won.
- Images that have won other photomicrography contests are not eligible.
- The photomicrographs must have been taken using a light microscope.
- Macro Photography is not permitted.
- Each applicant can submit up to 3 images.
- All the submitted photographs will be retained by Nikon Instruments Inc. and will not be returned.
- Nikon reserves the right to change or modify the rules of the competition without any prior notice.
