Nikon Instruments Inc. invites entries for the Nikon Small World In Motion Video Competition 2019 from those interested in photomicrography. The video competition encompasses any movie or digital time-lapse photography taken through the microscope. Announced as part of the 37th annual Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition in 2011, this competition adds a new distinct discipline to the competition. Candidates above 18 years of age can enter this competition and stand a chance to win prizes worth up to USD 3000.
Nikon Small World In Motion Video Competition 2019
DeadlineClosed Eligibility The video competition is open to anyone who is interested in photomicrography and is above 18 years of age. There is no restriction in terms of subject matter. Thus, any type of light microscopy technique is acceptable including:
- Phase contrast
- Polarized light
- Fluorescence
- Interference contrast
- Darkfield
- Confocal
- Deconvolution
- Mixed techniques
Note: The following are not eligible to enter the competition:
- Nikon employees
- Families of Nikon employees
- Contest judges
- Individuals engaged in the manufacture or sale of microscopes, related accessories or photographic equipment
Benefits The judges will select Top 3 prize winners who will receive the following benefits:
- 1st prize - USD 3,000
- 2nd prize - USD 2,000
- 3rd prize - USD 1,000
- Honourable mentions - USD 100 each
Note: Prizes for top 3 winners will be paid by check in US funds and other prizes will be paid by Visa gift card also in US funds. Winners will be responsible for all applicable taxes.

Step 2: Read the competition rules before applying.
Step 3: Register as a new user or log in using existing credentials.
Step 4: Enter the relevant details and submit the entries on the portal.
Step 5: Submit the application.
Important Dates
- Application deadline: 30 April 2019
- Winners to be notified: By 15 August 2019
Selection Criteria
The prize winners will be selected by an independent panel of experts who are recognized authorities in the area of photomicrography and photography. The entries will be judged on the basis of the following:
- Originality
- Informational content
- Technical proficiency
- Artistic and visual impact
Terms and Conditions
- The length of the movie should not be more than 60 seconds.
- The use of sound is not permitted in the video.
- The use of graphics of any kind is not allowed.
- Former prize winners will be ineligible to win the first prize in three contests immediately following the content they won.
- The use of Nikon equipment is not required.
- The videos must have been made using a light microscope.
- All the submitted files will be retained by Nikon Instruments Inc. and will not be returned.
- Nikon reserves the right to change or modify the rules of the competition without any prior notice.
- Nikon reserves the right to edit winning movies for format and length for promotional purposes.
