About The Program

Admission in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is made on the basis of a Selection Test designed and conducted by the CBSE. The test is called the Jawahar NAvodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST). It is of non-verbal nature, class-neutral and designed so as to ensure that talented children from rural areas are able to compete without facing any disadvantage. Special care is taken to ensure that children from far flung areas get admission forms free of cost without any difficulty. Sufficient publicity is done through Doordarshan,etc.
17,09,087 students applied for admission in class 6 in various JNVs for 2011-12 Selection Test.

While education in the schools is free including boarding, lodging, uniforms and textbooks, a nominal fee of Rs.200/- per month will have to be paid by the children from IX to XII class. However, children belonging to SC/ST, Girls and Physically Handicapped and from the families whose income is below poverty line are exempted from payment of fees.

       Objective of the Scheme

  1. To provide good quality modern education including a strong component of culture, inculcation of values, awareness of the environment, adventure activities and physical education to the talented children predominantly from rural areas.
  2. To ensure that students attain a reasonable level of competency in three languages.
  3. To promote national integration through migration of students from Hindi to non-Hindi speaking State and vice-versa.
  4. To serve in each district as focal point for improvement of quality of school education in general through sharing of experiences and facilities.

a)Only the candidates from the district concerned where the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya has been opened are eligible to apply for admission. However, the district where JNV is opened and is bifurcated at a later date, the old boundaries of the district are considered for the purpose of eligibility for admission into JNVST, in case a new Vidyalaya has not started in newly bifurcated district as yet.

b) A candidate seeking admission must not have been born before 01-05-2003 and after 30-04-2007. This will apply to candidates of all categories, including those who belong to the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs). In case of doubt of overage candidate seeking admission, they may be referred to the Medical Board for confirmation of the age. The decision of the Medical Board will be final.

c) A candidate appearing for the selection test must be studying in Class-V for the whole of the academic session 2015-16 in a Government/Government aided or other recognized schools or ‘B’ certificate competency course of National Institute of Open Schooling in the same district where he/she is seeking admission. A school will be deemed recognized if it is declared so by the Government or by any other agency authorized on behalf of Government. The Schools receiving financial assistance under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan should be sponsored by Govt. or Govt. authorized agencies. Schools where students have obtained ‘B’ certificate under National Institute of Open Schooling should have accreditation of NIOS. A candidate must successfully complete Class-V in the session 2015-16. Actual admission in Class-VI for the session 2016-17 will be subject to this condition.

d) A Candidate claiming admission under rural quota must have studied and passed classes III, IV and V from a Govt. / Govt. aided / recognized school spending one full academic session each year in a school located in rural area.

e) Candidates who will be passing ‘B’ certificate competency course of National Institute of Open Schooling on or before 30th September, 2015 are also eligible to write admission test provided they are in the prescribed age group. The forms of such candidates will be verified by DEO/DIOS. The rural status of a child from National Institute of Open Schooling will be decided on the basis of a certificate to be issued by Tehsildar/District Magistrate of the District indicating that the child has been residing in rural areas for the last three years. Students studying under the above scheme from urban and notified areas are not eligible for obtaining seat in rural quota.

f) A Candidate who has not been promoted and admitted to Class-V before 30th September, 2015 is not eligible to apply.

g) No candidate is eligible to appear in the selection test second time, under any circumstances.

How to get an Application Form?

Application forms for admission may be made on the prescribed Application Form (attached with the prospectus) available free of cost from:

(i) Block Education Officer (BEO)

(ii) District Education Officer (DEO)

(iii) Headmaster of any Govt. / Govt. aided / Recognized Accredited Institute / Centre of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan / NIOS where he/she is studying.

(iv) Principal, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya.

In case of non-availability of JNVST prescribed Application Form from the above, you may copy the format of Application Form on plain paper (preferably 21cm x 30cm) from our website at the address http://www.navodaya.nic.in or the newspaper advertisement and apply on it.

How to submit an Application Form

Duly filled in application form must reach the Block Education Officer latest by 30 th September 2015. It shall be signed by the Head of the recognized school/Special Education Scheme (Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan) where the child is studying in Class-V, on or before 30 th September 2015 (Candidates are advised to get the acknowledgement from the BEO at the time of submission of Application Form).

1 Good quality modern education for talented children predominantly from rural areas.

2 Candidates – Rural, at least 75% Urban, utmost 25%.

3 Reservation of seats for students from SC/ST categories in proportion to their population in the district subject to the national minimum.

4 Reservation of seats for girls – 33%.

5 Co-educational and fully residential, up to Class-XII.

6 Location – usually in rural areas. One the basis of offer of cost free land and rent free temporary buildings by State/UT Governments.

7 Free education including boarding and lodging as well as expenses on Uniforms, Text Books, and Stationery etc.

8 Affiliated to CBSE.

9 Admission is Class-VI only through objective type test designed and conducted by CBSE in the concerned district.

10 Implementation of Three-Language Formula.

11 Regional languages as medium of instruction for first three years. Hindi/English afterwards.

12 30% of students in Class-IX from a Vidyalaya located in one linguistic area spend one academic year in a Vidyalaya in a different linguistic region to promote national integration through understanding of the diversity and plurality of country’s cultures and people.

Criteria for Admission of Students to Class-XI against vacant seats

1 Admission of students will be made against available vacancies in Class-XI on the basis of marks secured by students in Class-X Board Exam during academic session 2015-16.

2 A common merit list will be prepared against all the existing vacancies at State level for admission to Class XI based on available vacancies from the district/nearby districts JNVs. Applicants must indicate his/her preference for admission in various JNVs in the State in which he/she is residing in his/her application form. Selected candidates from the District will be admitted in concerned JNV to the extent of available vacancies. For remaining candidates allocation of JNV will be made based on the list of available vacancies and preferences given by the candidates.

3 Candidates are required to submit their applications in the prescribed proforma alongwith photocopies (duly attested by the Head of the Institution last attended) in support of their qualification, caste etc. The Principal of the concerned JNV will verify this information furnished by the candidates from original certificates at the time of admission.

4 The selected students will be informed by the Principal of the concerned JNV by registered post.

5 Newly admitted students have to undergo medical checkup by the Vidyalaya Doctor. Students suffering from infectious disease/serious ailments shall not be admitted.

6 Ten days orientation programme will be arranged for newly admitted students to bridge the learning gaps and to adapt them for new environment.

Scheme of Studies

Streams available in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas will be allotted to students as per the criteria decided by the Samiti for allocation of streams to existing students joining Class-XI :

Relaxation of marks for admission to Science/Commerce Streams in Class-XI

It may be ensured that weightage is given to the eligible Sports/NCC/Scout/Guide students for admission to various streams in Class-XI in accordance with the criteria decided by the Samiti.
