What is J N Tata Endowment Loan Scholarships 2016?

The J. N. Tata Endowment awards a one-time loan scholarship only at the beginning of the course to Indian nationals for full time Postgraduate/Ph.D./Postdoctoral studies abroad and in India, in all fields, irrespective of caste, creed, gender or community. The amount to be awarded to each Scholar by way of the loan scholarship is determined on the basis of the norms laid down for the purpose, and does not cover the full cost of studies. The amount awarded as the loan scholarship ranges between Rs.1,50,000 and Rs.6,00,000. All applicants do not necessarily qualify for the maximum amount.

The selected scholars may also qualify for a gift scholarship and travel assistance from our allied Trusts as may be decided at the sole discretion of the Trustees of the concerned Trusts. A gift scholarship can be for a maximum amount of Rs. 10,00,000 and the travel grant can be a maximum of Rs. 50,000

Who can apply for this scholarship ?

  • Applicants should be Indian nationals and graduates of a recognised Indian university with a consistently good academic record.
  • Students in the final year of a degree course and those awaiting results can also apply.
  • Mid-career professionals up to the age of 45, planning to go abroad for further research, specialisation or training, are eligible to apply.
  • At the time of submitting the completed applications, candidates need not have the admission / offer letters from the universities to which they have applied for the relevant academic year.

How can you apply ?

Candidates have to download the application, fill it offline and submit it from the same email-id which is mentioned in the application form to jnte@tatatrusts.org, along with a scanned copy of the letter of recommendation (LOR). Applications should not be sent by post.

01. When can I apply?

The applications for the Loan Scholarship will be open by the end of first week of January, 2016.

02. What is the eligibility for the Loan Scholarships?

To be eligible for the Loan Scholarship an applicant must:

  • Be an Indian national
  • Be below 45 years of age
  • Have a graduate degree from a recognised Indian university
  • Could be in the final year of graduation or awaiting results
  • Have secured admission or awaiting admission to pursue Master’s / PhD / Postdoctoral fellowships / Research fellowships.

03. Can I apply even if I do not have confirmed admission?

Yes, you may apply even if you do not have confirmed admission from the universities you have applied to.

04. What is the loan scholarship?

The scholarship is at a simple interest of 2% per annum. However, if students repay within the specified time period (between the end of 4th and 7th year), the Trustees may waive the interest.

05. What is the maximum loan amount you offer?

The amount awarded as the loan scholarship ranges between Rs. 1,50,000/- and Rs. 6,00,000/-. All applicants do not necessarily qualify for the maximum amount.

06. Is there any gift awards also?

Yes, the selected scholars may also qualify for a gift scholarship and travel assistance from our allied Trusts as may be decided at the sole discretion of the Trustees of the concerned Trusts. A gift scholarship can be for a maximum amount of Rs. 10,00,000/- and the travel grant can be a maximum of Rs. 50,000/-.

07. Do you ask for any collateral security?

We do not insist on any collateral but applicants must have a guarantor. This is mandatory.

08. Where can one obtain the application form?

The application forms are available online on our web site.

09. Can the application be filled in online?

No, candidates have to download the application, fill it offline and submit it from the same email-id which is mentioned in the application form, along with a scanned copy of the letter of recommendation (LOR). Applications should not be sent by post.

10. What is the last date to submit the application form ?

There is no specific date for submission but all completed application forms should be submitted at least 45 days before the candidate departs overseas. For instance : if candidate scheduled to leave on 15th September then application should be submitted by 31st July.

11. Do you have any format for the Statement of Purpose (SOP)?

There is no specific format but we have put in guidelines for drafting a good SOP. Please carefully go through this.

12. Is there any specific format for LOR?

The LOR can be written by a Professor of the college or university where the candidate is studying OR the Employer, in case the applicant is / was working. The LOR should be addressed to “The Trustees of the J. N. Tata Endowment” on their respective letter heads with full address, telephone and mobile number. Alternately, it may be sent from their official mail ID. Please note that LOR sent from personal mail ID will not be considered.

13. Are any documents required while submitting the application form?

All scanned copies of the required documents are must be submitted at the time of the interview.

14. Can I update my application form at the later stage?

Yes, you can send us updates by email, clearly specifying what is the update about, using the same email ID as in the application form. Please be precise in your mail as we need to update the same information in our system.

15. How and when will I get the status of my application form?

Candidates who are selected for the next level are intimated over email between March and July.

16. When are the interviews held?

The interviews are held between March and June.

17. Are the candidates reimbursed for their travel and accommodation for the scholarship interviews?

The candidates are not reimbursed for their travel and accommodation for the scholarship interviews.
