What is IISER BS-MS Dual degree Program 2016?

Admissions to all IISERs for the academic year 2016 has started on 25 May 2016. To promote high quality scientific education, research and training, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, has set up seven Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) at Berhampur, Bhopal, Kolkata, Mohali, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram and Tirupati.

BS-MS Dual Degree Programme

It is a five year dual degree program for bright and motivated science students who have passed (10+2) level. The program integrates classroom learning with research and provides ample scope for multidisciplinary interactions. The first two years of the program consist of core courses in basic sciences, the third and fourth years are dedicated to specialization in chosen science subjects and the fifth year includes a research project. The training during the program enables students to pursue a career in academia, R&D institutes and science based industries.

Who can apply for this scholarship ?

There are three channels of admission. Candidates will be admitted to IISER only through these channels.

  1. Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) channel
  2. Joint Entrance Examination of Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT–JEE) channel
  3. State and Central Boards Channel (SCB) channel

These channels will be referred to as KVPY, IIT-JEE and SCB respectively

Indian nationals, and students belonging to PIO or OCI category are eligible to apply provided they satisfy the eligibility criteria described below.

KVPY Channel

Candidates having a valid KVPY fellowship commencing from 2016-17 academic session are eligible to apply for admissions. Additional cut off criteria may be applicable.

IIT-JEE Channel

Candidates securing a rank within 10000 in the Common Merit List (CML) of JEE Advanced 2016 for admissions to IIT’s. Additional cut off criteria may be applicable.

SCB Channel

Students who have passed (10+2) level with science stream in 2015 or 2016 with marks equal or above the cut off percentage in their respective boards as given in the table below are eligible to apply. For the candidates belonging to the Non-Creamy Layer of the Other Backward Classes (OBCNC) and Persons with Disability (PD) categories, there is a 5% relaxation. The cut-off percentage for the Scheduled Castes (SC), the Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Kashmiri Migrants (KM) candidates is 55% in (10+2) level for all boards. Students applying through SCB channel will have to appear in the IISER Aptitude Test which will be conducted at various centres across the country. To calculate your percentage of marks obtained use your board’s method.

FAQs

Q1: I am a class XII science student, what programme can I apply for at IISERs?

Five year BS-MS dual degree programme.

Q2: How do I get admission to the BS-MS dual degree program in IISERs?

If you are eligible then you can apply by visiting “apply now” page. Applicants in KVPY or IIT-JEE channels will be allotted based on their ranks, preference of IISERs, categories and vacancies.

Q3: Do I need to apply separately for different IISERs?

No. All IISERs admit students through a common application process. One application form is valid for all IISERs.

Q4: How many seats are available for the admission to the BS-MS dual degree programme in 2016?

Total available seats is 1125 for all IISERs put together.

Q5: What is the intake through different channels?

  • Up to 50% seats for KVPY and IIT-JEE (JEE Advanced 2016) channels.
  • Remaining seats through State and Central Boards channel based on an Aptitude Test conducted by IISERs. This means that the unfilled seats of the KVPY and IIT-JEE (JEE Advanced 2016) channels will be filled through the SCB channel.

Q6: What are the Cut-off ranks/marks for these channels?

There is no rank cut-off for KVPY and SCB Channels; the candidates are allocated as per the seat availability for intake through these channels. However, for IIT-JEE channel, the cut-off rank is 10,000. Please note that GoI rules of reservations are followed.

Q7: Can I apply through more than one channel?

Yes.

Q8: Do I need to apply separately for each channel?

You may apply to IISERs through multiple channels provided you meet the eligibility criteria for each of the channels you want to apply through. It requires separate application and payment of application fee for each channel.

Q9: Does reservation of seats apply for admission?

Yes, as per Government of India rules.

Q10: How do I apply?

Application has to be done online only at our admission portal. The step-wise details of the application procedure will be announced on this website in due course.

Q11: Is there an application fee?

There is a non-refundable application fee of Rs. 1500/- (Rs. 750/- for candidates applying under SC/ST category and Kashmiri Migrants)

Q12: Is there any financial support for students admitted at IISERs?

KVPY scholars admitted to IISERs would draw fellowship as per KVPY norms. In addition a limited number of INSPIRE scholarships of Rs. 5000/- per month will be available for candidates admitted through JEE Advanced and SCB channels. This supersedes all earlier anouncements regarding scholarship. The continuation of the scholarship depends on the academic performance.

Q13: What is the fee structure for BS-MS programme at IISERs?

The information regarding the fee structure of individual IISERs is available at the websites of respective IISERs.

Q14: Can I be a day-scholar at IISERs?

No. IISERs are fully residential campuses and students are required to stay in campus hostels.

Q15: Are all candidates satisfying the eligibility criteria admitted to IISERs?

No, admission to IISERs is based on the total number of available seats. Refer to question number 6 for further details.

Q16: How do I make my choice of IISER?

You will be asked to give your preferences in the online application form. The details of the application procedure will be announced on this website in due course.

Q17: Do I get the IISER of my choice?

The allotment is based of the availability of seats, ranks in the merit list and applicant’s preferences.

Q18: Can I transfer my admission from one IISER to another at any time?

No. Allotment to an IISER is final. No application/request for transfer to another IISER will be entertained.

Q19: I plan to apply through a particular channel. Where do I find the Important dates for that channel?

Q20: What is the curriculum structure for BS-MS dual degree programme?

Students are trained on disciplines of basic sciences as per the designed curriculum of respective IISERs within the first two years. Subsequently, they can take up specialized subject(s). Please refer to individual IISER website for detailed curriculum structure.

Q21: What is the syllabus for the IISER Aptitude Test for the candidates applying through State and Central Boards channel?

Q22: What is the format of the Aptitude Test?

The format of the Aptitude Test is as follows

  • Multiple-choice questions in four subjects – Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics
  • 15 questions in each subject (total: 60)
  • Duration: 180 minutes
  • Score: +3 (correct response), 0 (no response), -1 (wrong response)

Q23: Can I have model questions for the Aptitude Test?

Q24: Where is the IISER Aptitude Test conducted?

The IISER Aptitude Test is only for SCB channel candidates and is conducted in various cities across India. The details of the test centres will be available from this website soon. The choice of city where a candidate wants to appear for Aptitude Test needs to be indicated at the time of filling online application form. A single city may have multiple centres for aptitude test. The hall ticket would have the center details printed.

Q25: When do I get the Hall Ticket for IISER Aptitude Test?

The Hall Ticket will be available to the candidate as mentioned here at the application portal. The candidate must login to his/her application portal to download the Hall Ticket.

Q26: I do not have Biology/Mathematics at +2 level, can I take the test ?

Yes, you can. However, the questions will be from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. You may also look at the answer to the question number 22.

Q27: What is ‘Float’ option?

During the application you will be asked whether you would like to ‘opt for float’. If you do not get IISER of your First choice during your allocation then we will allocate you again in the next round if you selected “yes” in the Float option. This increases your chance of getting either your First choice or an IISER for which you have a higher preference, although it cannot be guaranteed.

Q28: What is the meaning of OBC and OBCNC?

OBCNC stands for Other Backward Classes (non-creamy layers). If you belong to this category then you must select OBCNC as your category. However, other OBC candidates must select ‘General’ as their category.

Q29: What should I do if I have paid the application fees more than once for a single application?

You must send your proof of payments to ask-jac [AT] iiserkol.ac.in. All legimitate refund claims will be processed after the application deadline is over.

Q30: What should I do if I have already paid the application fees, but the money has been refunded?

Immediately notify through email to ask-jac [AT] iiserkol.ac.in, else while scrutinizing your application may stand cancelled.

Q31: My question is not listed above. What should I do?

You may ask JAC-2016 any questions that you have, by sending an email to ask-jac [AT] iiserkol.ac.in. However if your question is already answered in this website then you may not be given a response.

In addition a limited number of INSPIRE scholarships will be available for candidates admitted through JEE Advanced and SCB channel as applicable as per the norms prescribed by DST INSPIRE scheme. This supersedes all earlier announcements regarding scholarship.

Terms and Conditions

  1. The Eligibility page outlines the eligibility criteria which each candidate must fulfill before applying online.
  2. The admission portal would follow the time line as detailed in Dates page.
  3. All forms must be submitted only at the link given in the Apply Now page. Any other form of application will not be entertained.
  4. Only one application from an eligible candidate with valid details would be accepted for each channel. Submission of dummy applications with unverifiable details will disqualify the applicant at any stage of admission.
  5. Candidates should preview their entire application form before final submission. Certain details of the application form such as name, email, application no, category, Kashmiri Migrant status, Disability status etc cannot be changed after final submission of online application.
  6. Any tampering or modification of the downloaded application form would disqualify the candidate’s candidature. The application form should be directly printed on paper and must be duly signed by the applicant and the guardian (as specified during application) as per the website specifications otherwise application will be rejected.
  7. While applying On-Line, the following would be required;  personal details such as date of birth as printed on the Birth Certificate, digital copies of your passport size photo and (10+2) marksheet in PNG/JPG/BMP format and of sizes below 2 MB.
  8. After successfully initiation of the application online, candidates will be assigned system  generated Application Number. The candidates are required to take print out of the Application Form, put his/her signature at the required places, and the Guardian’s signature at the designated places. The form must be submitted and would be verified against appropriate original documents at the  respective IISER if the candidate has been offered a position for admission in that IISER.
  9. Copyright and Privacy Policy: JAC 2016 collects the applicants’ personal and academic information. These information would be shared with the administrative sections of all IISERs and would be kept confidential. All information provided by the applicant would be verified against appropriate original documents at the time of admission.  Wrong or unverifiable information in the application will lead to rejection of the candidature. By submitting the application form, the candidate enables JAC 2016 to use their submitted data for the purpose of determining Eligible candidates for Admission to IISER system.
  10. Risk of Loss: Application fee (Rs 750 for SC/ST/KM and Rs 1500 otherwise) is non-refundable. The candidates  are advised to carefully go through all pages in Application Website  page and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page to satisfy themselves about their eligibility. Application fees submitted by ineligible candidates shall not be refunded.
  11. Eligibility to Apply does not indicate Eligibility for Admission. From eligible applicants admission would be offered based on rank, category, preferences of IISERs and vacancies in IISERs. In the case of any dispute (non-judicial) the decision of The Chairperson, Joint Admissions Committee 2016 would be final and binding.
  12. Governing Law: IISERs are governed by THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF TECHNOLOGY (AMENDMENT) ACT, 2012 an Act of Parliament. Since IISER Kolkata hosts JAC 2016, hence any legal dispute arising out of the application process need to be settled at the High Court of Kolkata. However, legal dispute arising on the day of admission at a specific IISER should be settled at a High Court nearest the respective IISER.
  13. Failing to comply with this procedure may lead to rejection of application/candidature.
