Honjo International Scholarship Foundation invites applications from foreign graduate and post graduate students who are willing to study in Japanese graduate schools for earning a doctoral degree.

DeadlineClosed Eligibility To be eligible for the scholarship, an applicant must -
- Not possess Japanese citizenship.
- Be registered or applying for a graduate school in Japan starting from April 1, 2018.
- Have been born after 31 March 1982 (for students enrolling in a PhD program).
- Have been born after 31 March 1987 (for students enrolling in Master’s program).
- Have a deep understanding of international goodwill and friendship.
- Be able to attend the events organised by the foundation.
- Be able to carry out the everyday conversation in Japanese.
- Submit a research plan (for students enrolling in a professional graduate school).
How can you apply? The eligible candidates can apply for the scholarship with following steps –
Step 1: Fill in the application online by clicking here and generate the Application Number for the scholarship program.
Step 2: Download the application form from here.
Step 3: Fill in all the required details in Japanese either by hand-written or typed.
Step 4: Send the application form along with all the required documents through postal mail at the given address –

Terms and Conditions
Award Details
The period of the scholarship is set in accordance with the shortest period of time required to complete the intended degree. The student once awarded the scholarship will be able to choose any of the following options –
- JPY 200,000 per month for1 or 2 years
- JPY 180,000 per month for 3 years
- JPY 150,000 per month for 4 or 5 years

- Candidate’s resume
- Personal information form
- Academic transcript
- Research plan
- Recommendation letter from a professor
- Letter of recommendation or certificate of enrollment
Note: The application form must be written in Japanese. Other documents like the academic transcript, recommendation letter and enrollment certificate are acceptable either in English or Japanese.
Other details
- The application package should be sent with A4-sized envelope.
- Do not use a stapler to file the documents.
- The applications will be accepted between 1 September 2017 and 31 October 2017.
- The first round of selection involves document submission by applicants.
- The second round of selection involves interviews conducted in Tokyo.
- In case, the applicant is outside of Japan, the interview will be conducted via Skype.
