What is GREEN Olympiad Examination 2016?

The GREEN Olympiad is India's first annual examination on environmental issues for school students. The examination is designed innovatively to test the knowledge of students and also educate and sensitize them in the process. One of its kind in India, the GREEN Olympiad asks questions on air and water pollution, environment-friendly initiatives and practices, land and water resources, forests, wildlife, oceans, socio-economic aspects of natural resources, global climate change, and the roles of society to improve our environment.

Who can apply for this scholarship ?

Students from classes 4 to 10 are eligible to apply.

What is the GREEN Olympiad?

A.The GREEN Olympiad is India's first annual examination on environmental issues for school students. Who are not eligible to participate in the GREEN Olympiad?

A. PRIVATE COACHING INSTITUTE AND SIMILAR ENTITIES ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE. Individual registration from students is not accepted.

I am from a Hindi medium school; can I appear in GREEN Olympiad?

A. Yes, of course. The examination is conducted both in English and Hindi. You can opt for either language.

If I already have appeared in the GREEN Olympiad in the past, can I enroll again?

A. As long as you are a student in class VIII, IX and X you may participate in the GREEN Olympiad

I am not an Indian citizen nor do I reside in India, am I eligible for GREEN Olympiad?

A. Yes, you are eligible for the GREEN Olympiad, as it is open to foreign national as well.

Is there a lower/upper limit to the number of nominations from a school?

A. A school can nominate as many students as it wishes. There is no upper limit to the number of nominations from a school. However, a minimum of 20 students per school is required for registration to the examination.

When is the examination held?

A. The examination is generally held on two dates, in August -October Please refer to the registration form for this year to know the dates of examination for this year.

What is the procedure for registration?

A. Schools can register for this examination through the registration form. You can write to us for the form/or download it from the GREEN Olympiad website. We do not accept individual registrations from students.

What is the deadline for registration?

A. To register for the Green Olympiad, send in your applications along with the registration form and draft (details in the registration form) so that it reaches TERI by the last date mentioned in the registration form. Please refer to the registration form for the deadline for this year.

How do I prepare for the examination?

A. There are various ways to brush up your knowledge. Read as many articles as you can on environmental issues in magazines, newspapers, books, journals, encyclopedias. You can watch channels such as Discovery, Animal Planet, National Geographic, etc., on television. Besides this, you could also order a copy of 'Enviro-Challenge': a well-researched question bank containing over 500 questions on diverse topics on environment.

How will I know if I have cleared the GREEN Olympiad?

A. The results are posted on GREEN Olympiad website ever year. Also, certificates along with complete mark list will be sent to all participating schools after October.

Are there any prizes for students writing the GREEN Olympiad?

A. 'Certificates of participation' are awarded to all students who participate in the GREEN Olympiad. Merit and distinction certificates are also given to top performers. There is also a cash award for the state toppers.

Terms and Conditions

Please read the following instructions carefully before filling up the Registration Form:

  • The examination is open ONLY for schools affiliated to a recognized education board s/trusts.  ‘Registration Form’ for ‘Level 1’ (students from classes 4 and 5), ‘Level 2’ (students from classes 6, 7 and 8), ‘Level 3’ (students from classes 9 and 10) should be filled separately.
  • All participants will receive ‘Certificate’ of participation, merit or distinction depending on their individual performance and schools / students those who excel in this examination will also be felicitated.
  • Examination material will be delivered to the schools and all updates related to this examination are available on the project website, www.teriin.org/olympiad.
  • For sample papers and other updates, please check the project website on regular basis. Registration Details:
  • Individual registration from students will not be accepted.
  • Each school will be the center for its registered students.
  • Each school can nominate any number of students for this examination at each level. However, participation of a minimum number of 10 students per level is mandatory.
  • Each participating student has to pay Rs 75/- as ‘registration fee’ to his/her school. After deducting Rs. 5/- per student (towards expenditure for conducting examination in their school premises), a school has to pay total registration fee (i. e. Rs. 70/- × number of participating students) through a Bank Draft drawn in favour of TERI, payable at New Delhi. Cash/ cheque will not be accepted.
