What is Asian Environmental Journalism Awards 2017 ?

Asian Environmental Journalism Awards 2017 invites application from professional journalists, reporters, and photojournalists who are citizens or permanent residents of an Asian country. The objective of this program is to recognize and reward excellence in environmental journalism at all levels of society.

Who can apply for this scholarship ?

  • Open to journalists age between 18 to 30 years
  • Professional and citizen journalists, reporters and photojournalists who are citizens or permanent residents of an Asian country
  • Media organizations should be based in Asia
  • Applicants may be current or former intern journalists from recognized media organizations or young professional journalist

Q: When is the deadline for the AEJA 2017 applications?
A: 
The AEJA 2017 will open for applications on 17 March 2017 and close on 17 July 2017.

Q: What is the application fee for the AEJA 2017?
A:
No application fee is required for the AEJA 2017.

Q: How do I apply for the awards?
A:
Once the application window is open, simply go to www.sec.org.sg/aeja and click on the 'Get Started Now!' button. Create an account by filling in the form with your email address, password and contact details. You will then log in with your email address and password.

Q: May I request assistance in filling up my application?

Q: Will I know the status of my application?
A:
Once you have completed your submissions using the online system, a pop-up notification will appear. Winners will be notified prior to the awards ceremony in October 2017.

Q: Is there a timeframe during which all submitted articles must have been written?
A:
All articles must have been written and/or published between 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017.

Q: My article was published online, on a news site – which category does it qualify for?
A:
If the news site is simply the online presence of a registered media organization (e.g. Straits Times Online), your piece is eligible for the Environmental Story of the Year category or the Environmental Journalist of the Year category.

Q: Who is eligible for these awards?
A:
To maximize the relevance of the awards to the Asian Context, the awards are open to:
Citizens of any Asian Country, who write about an environmental issue taking place in Asia. The pieces submitted can focus on a specific country, or on the region in general. Journalists of any nationality, who have been living and working in any Asian Country for a minimum of one calendar year before the close of the application deadline on 17 July 2017.

Documents to be attached:

  • Letters of commendation from colleagues, editors or supervisors
  • Other journalistic works that cite your submitted article as a source or point of inspiration
  • Positive feedback addressed to applicant to commend their work (must be dated and non-anonymous)
  • Reports on environmental initiatives undertaken by individual or media organizations (e.g. environmental-related certifications and volunteer activities that show continued environmental commitment)

Period of assessment:
All articles which are submitted should have been published from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017.


Dates:

  • 17 March 2017: Launch of Online Portal
  • 17 July 2017: Closing date for applications
  • October 2017: Awards Ceremony at the SEC Conference 2017

Terms and Conditions:

  • Applicants can apply for more than one category.
  • A high standard of working English is a requirement for all applicants and the application form should be filled out in English. If the original article is in another language, a certified English translation is required.
  • Applicants may submit written or broadcast pieces for the relevant categories.
  • Digital or film photographs will be accepted for the Environmental Photograph of the Year category. All submissions must be high resolution (300DPI) images, and at least 2000 px on the shortest side.
  • The applicant warrants that he or she is the sole owner of all intellectual property rights (including copyright) to the photograph and the intellectual property rights have not been licensed or assigned to any other person.
  • The judges’ decision is final, and no further correspondence on their decision will be entertained.
  • The Singapore Environment Council, the organizers of the Asian Environmental Journalism Awards 2017, reserves the right to change these terms and conditions at any time, at its sole discretion, without prior notice.
