What is Ashoka University Scholarship Program 2016?

Ashoka University is a private, nonprofit university, and an unprecedented example of collective public philanthropy in India. Ashoka offers its students a multidisciplinary liberal education in undergraduate as well as postgraduate education.
The University offers need-based scholarships in the form of grants and not loans. Waivers range from 15% on tuition to 100%on all expenses. As the campus is located out of Haryana, applicants from the state will be given special consideration for aid opportunities.

Ashoka is committed to providing financial aid to all deserving students.

While selection to Ashoka is based upon student merit, including academic and extracurricular achievement, scholarships are entirely based upon need. A student who has earned admission to the University will not be turned away if they are not able to pay tuition. The University's scholarships have been put in place so that students can attend without any financial burden or difficulty.

Students who require financial aid must submit their parents’ income tax returns, details on gross annual income of all earning members in the family, their assets, and also the number of dependents when filling out their application.

About Scholarships:

  • Aid at Ashoka is only in the form of grants (scholarships) and not loans.
  • Ashoka offers scholarships based on need rather than merit.
  • Applicants from the state of Haryana will be given special consideration for aid opportunities.

What is a liberal or a liberal arts education?
A liberal education focuses on providing the skills and perspectives to students, which are considered an essential part of leading an ethical and purposeful life. Essentially, liberal education incorporates breadth and depth across multiple disciplines. Typically, students take a variety of courses in different disciplines and declare their dedicated course of study after exploring their interests.

What is the difference between pure and interdisciplinary majors?
Pure majors are traditional disciplinary programmes that allow students the opportunity to study their chosen academic field in great depth, acquire a certain expertise in the area, as well as explore the interconnection with other disciplines. The Interdisciplinary major at Ashoka goes beyond the traditional boundaries of disciplines and departments to give students an opportunity to combine multiple academic interests into a single degree programme. These are not double-degree programmes, but seek to combine closely related fields or explore new approaches to the study of particular fields.

Do students have to declare their majors at the time of admission?
Ashoka offers flexibility in its programmes. Students will only indicate their preferred major at the time of admission. They have the option to take major courses from as early as their first semester, alongside the mandatory Foundation Courses. They decide their specialisation in the third semester. They can also change their majors if they want.

Can students do a double major?
Students at Ashoka do not have an option of doing a double major.

What is the nature of collaboration with partner institutions?
Through our collaborations with King’s College, London, Sciences Po, Carleton College, UPenn, and UC Berkeley, students experience exposure to the academic life of other top universities. This includes curriculum design, research collaborations, faculty exchange as well as student exchange programmes. Credits earned will be transferable, both for summer and semester exchange programmes.

Do students have the options to pursue extra-curricular and co-curricular activities?
Ashoka University has an active Student Life department which is committed to engaging students outside of the classroom. We currently have several student-run clubs and societies on campus, in addition to music, arts, dance, and sports opportunities.

What kind of opportunities can graduates of Ashoka University expect? Is the Ashoka degree recognised by education institutions abroad?
Graduates of Ashoka’s Young India Fellowship, have been offered admission to and are studying at some of the world’s leading universities like Oxford University, LSE, Sciences Po, Central European University, Columbia University and the University of Chicago. Many have also been placed at top corporate houses like American Express, Cipla, Dua Consulting, Genpact, Godrej, and TCS. Some went on to the non-profit sector and are employed in World Bank, WWF, Amnesty International, National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), and the UN. Students have also created around eight start-ups in different fields.

When will applications open for the undergraduate batch commencing in August 2016?
Applications opened on October 5, 2015. The cycle comprises of four application rounds, and will extend up to July 2016. The round deadlines can be found here.
The deadline for Round 1 is January 11, 2016.

How can I apply to undergraduate programme commencing in August 2016 ?
Students need to fill the UG application form in order to apply for the programme. These forms are available online on our website. Alternatively, students can also download the form and send the downloaded form to our Admissions Office.

What is the criteria for selection into the undergraduate programme?
A holistic selection process aims at determining both the fulfilled and potential merit of an applicant. Candidates will be evaluated on their consistent academic performance, active engagement outside the curriculum, and personal impact in terms of challenges they might have faced and overcome. Candidates shortlisted on the basis of their application will be invited for an interview.

What are the academic scores that have to be submitted for evaluation?
Students are required to submit their class IX, X, XI and XII final exam scores. In case they are applying before their board exam results are available, students must submit class XII predicted scores.

What are predicted grades/scores?
Students who are awaiting their final board results are required to submit their predicted grades. Predicted grades are supposed to be an accurate estimation of a student’s final grades. For students from the IB, Cambridge and other International boards, the school counselor must submit the predicted grades on behalf of the student. The process to do this is mentioned in the application form.
Students from other boards may submit their own predictions, or share the school counselor’s predictions. If students feel the pre-board marks are an accurate estimation of their final scores, they may use them as well.

Does Ashoka University require the SAT?
The SAT is not a mandatory requirement for applying to Ashoka. However, as a strong indicator of general aptitude, reading comprehension and writing, students are encouraged to take and submit their SAT scores. The Admissions Committee follows the University’s no cut-offs-based admissions policy even while evaluating SAT scores. The University can give students unconditional admission on the basis of their SAT scores. However, not every student with a SAT score will be eligible for an unconditional offer. The final decision, as mentioned before, depends on a variety of factors.
All students submitting their SAT scores, must send the official transcript through the college board to Ashoka University (DI Code – 7343)

Is it possible to apply before obtaining the final class XII board exam scores?
Yes. Applications prior to board exam results will be considered complete if submitted with SAT or predicted scores. Students who are invited for an interview are encouraged to take Ashoka’s online aptitude test. Students whose final board results are awaited and who have not taken either the SAT or the Ashoka aptitude test, admissions decisions extended will be conditional, which will be confirmed upon reception of final exam scores.

What is the weightage for each component – scores, extra-curriculars, essays and interview – in the final admissions decision?
Admissions decisions will be based primarily on students’ academic rigour and engagement, which includes exam scores, projects and research, if applicable. The metric further sufficiently considers and rewards equally disciplined and rigorous engagement in extra-curriculars, performance during the in-person interview, and the on-the-spot essay written at the time of the interview.
Internal benchmarks are at par with those followed by the best of universities in the world. Click here for admissions statistics from the 2013-14 cycle, which reflect some of these benchmarks.

How is students’ financial need assessed, for scholarships?
The application for financial aid is part of the online application to the undergraduate programme. Students who apply for aid will have to submit income tax returns and provide details of gross annual income of all earning members in the family, assets, and also the number of dependents.
Additionally, information from in-person interviews will be used to evaluate financial need.

How does one best prepare for applying to Ashoka University?
With a consistent academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular record, a clear and structured approach to writing the essays, and an honest interview, all that remains is for students to convey to the Ashoka admissions team the spark they have for a course of liberal learning.
