About The Program

Applications are invited for 13th Peter Porter Poetry Prize named after the fond memory of great Australian poet. Poems must be written in English language and should not exceed 75 lines. Any act of plagiarism will not be allowed.

The winner will receive $5000 and the other shortlisted poets will receive $500. Shortlisted poems will be published in the magazine as recognition. The student can submit their poem online as well as by post.

The student can also submit multiple poems at a time but have to submit them separately.

  • There is no age bar.
  • ABR staff, board members, and editorial advisers can enter in this competition but ABR contributors and volunteers may enter.
How can you apply?

Poems can be submitted online or by post.

Following are the steps for submitting online:

Step 1: Visit the link to enter online.

Step 2: Fill all the credentials and upload your poem there.

Step 3: If you want to upload more poems, you have to apply separately.

Step 4: Entries should be either in PDF or Word documents format.

Step i: The text should be single-lined spacing and in 12 pt font size. 

Step ii: The page number should be written there.

Step iii: Stanza breaks must be clearly indicated. 

Step iv: Your name must not appear in the document.

Step v: The file name should only include the title of the poem.

Step 5: You will receive a confirmation email. 

Following are the steps for submitting by post:

Step 1: Download the form from the website.

Step 2: Poems must be printed single-sided A4 size paper, with single-line spacing and 12 pt font size.

Step 3: Submit only one copy.

Step 4: The poet’s name must not appear in the poem anywhere – only on the entry form.

Step 5: Cheques should be made payable to Australian Book Review. 

Step 6: Address for posted entries: Porter Prize, Australian Book Review, Studio 2, 207 City Road, Southbank, Victoria 3006, Australia.

Step 7: Entries will be acknowledged by email within one month of receipt.

More details:

  • No plagiarism will be allowed i.e entry must be originally written by an individual.
  • Entries must not be anyone’s copyright.
  • An entry does not mean as an offer to other publications or prizes.
  • An entry should be brand new, i.e it has not appear anywhere before.
  • Poems entered in Porter competition but not shortlisted can re-enter.
  • The entry fee will not be refunded in any case.
  • The award also covers recognition in ABR Online and the print edition.
  • Copyright of the entry remains with the poet itself.
