An investment in the future: 1.37 lakh crore invested by Tamil Nadu govt in education

In an effort to boost the education sector in the state, the Tamil Nadu government has in the past six years allotted INR 1.37 lakh crore for the school education department, Chief Minister K Palaniswami informed on Monday.

While inaugurating 'Amma Auditorium' at Kandaswamy Naidu College run by the Pachaiyappa's Trust in Chennai, the chief minister said that the quality of 1,599 schools across the state has also been enhanced in the past six years.

"In the last six years INR 1.37 lakh crore has been allotted to the school education department,” he said, adding, “The quality of 1,599 schools have been enhanced across the state."

Talking about other developments related to education sector, the chief minister said that his government has set up many colleges and institutes in the state to promote education.

“The government has set up eight arts and science colleges, three university constituent colleges and one polytechnic in the state after I assumed office in February last year,” Palaniswami said.

Talking about many welfare programmes initiated by former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, he highlighted the financial assistance scheme 'Thalikku Thangam' for marriages of women beneficiaries. He also cited schemes including distribution of milch cows, bicycles to students.

Known as one of the oldest education institutions in the country, Pachaiyappa's Trust began operations in January 1842 with the objective of providing free education.
