With the aid of computer graphics, modern wizards can bring still images to life and create magic. These magicians are called animators and they are at the forefront of a multi-billion-dollar animation industry. With a number of private as well as government colleges providing 2D & 3D animation courses all over the country, the industry is one of the fastest growing in India as well.

A course in animation could be a complete undergraduate degree, an advanced diploma, or a certificate course, with eligibility requirements also differing accordingly. The duration for these courses, too, can vary from six months to five years. With so many of these courses and institutes mushrooming all over the country, prospective students of animation are bound to face a dilemma of choice. National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad

Established in 1961 by the Government of India as an autonomous institute, National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, is one of the most prestigious educational institutions in India for the study of Design and Visual Communication. The institute offers a 2.5 years Bachelors in Animation Film Design course. The objective of this programme is to enable students to find solutions to complex problems in various fields of communication design using animation film making as a creative medium.

Industrial Design Centre, IIT, Mumbai

Industrial Design Centre (IDC) was established by the Government of India in 1969 as part of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay. Located on a 220 hectares green campus in the north eastern suburbs of Mumbai, the institute offers a 2-year Masters in Animation Design. The program strives to create people with expertise who will eventually emerge as leaders to influence the future of Animation.

Birla Institute of Technology, Noida & Jaipur

Established in 1955, BIT is a well-recognized and prestigious institute of higher learning. Its Jaipur and Noida campuses offer a three years B.SC. Degree in Animation and Multimedia, a two-year Post Graduation Programme- M.Sc. Animation Design, and a Ph.D. in Animation & Multimedia. The institute has an excellent lab infrastructure for 2D & 3D Animation, and well-equipped computer systems for multimedia application.

School of Animation and Visual Effects, Kolkata

School of Animation and Visual Effects (SAVE), Kolkata, a part of Mayabious Academy, was established in 2002. The Academy offers both advanced and short-term career-oriented courses in animation with the latest in 2D and 3D animation. The program focusses on concentrated production work combined with industry-led theory, rather than purely theoretical instruction.

DSK International Campus, Pune

Established in 2008, DSKIC offers undergraduate level programs in 3D animation, graphics & web designing, multimedia, as well as certificate courses in game art to candidates. Offering both advanced and short-term career oriented courses in animation, the training provided at this institute is based on the standard approved by the French national committee for professional certification, CNCP.
